Patients Rights in India

As a patient in India, you are entitled to the following. Consumers should work together and then get Govt to amend acts and laws and get what is missing included..Also many hospitals dont honour these very well. That should also be done.

*Be told everything about your illness, treatment, the risks and side-effects involved

*Be handled with efficiency and care, with special regard for your modesty

*Know doctor's qualifications

*Keep your illness confidential

*Get a second opinion if needed

*Be discharged or moved to another preferred facility after consulting the doctor more

Now the Hospitals have become minting ground of money for the private doctors and Hospital owners. Let there be a restriction on blood/money sucking from the patients. more
In majority of the cases, whatever I have heard, and, seen, even the doctors on Roll, who take a round,in the hosptals,do not speak to patient and their relatives, rather they are very very busy,in the subject of "Taking Round",sorry to say. We do not have an "Empathy "factor. It is very much necessary. Therefore making any kind of system, will not work, unless the Doctors keep dialogue with patient and to their relatives,as an on going process. more
Doctors are creating a fear in the minds of patients to get them admitted even though it may not be required. How patients will enquire more. Most of the admissions are happening due to fear and pressure created by doctors. more
I am not surprised at your observations. I had to have an angiogram 6 years ago in a 'famous' corporate hospital in Chennai. I was shocked that my blood was tested for HIV without my consent or pretest counseling. As a Pathologist it was drilled into us that before testing for HIV consent and pretest counseling was mandatory. All the same, it was done without my being aware of it. Imagine that happening to a doctor. Similarly, in that hospital the Cardiologist charged me consulting fee for the 3 visits I made. As per medical convention, doctors should not charge fellow doctors or their families. However, many such doctors indulge in such unethical practices. What will their attitude towards others be? I shudder to think. more
