Penalty Standards for Couriers

I see the Government has requested we share our ratings of courier services. I think its about time we rely on citizen ratings and experience to change laws.

During Rakhi time many sisters send Rakhis to brothers but no one sends the courier tracking number generally. The courier fellows don't deliver many times or deliver open envelopes.

There should be clear penalties standards set if a package is lost. Any loss should lead to minimum auto compensation of INR 10,000 rupees by courier company to sender.

Can BIS please set standards. The courier services will only increase as ecommerce penetrates India. Time to set rules. more

I agree. The minimum compensation should be INR 10,000 to deter courier companies to outsource the job to non-performing entities. Parcels should be accepted under open parcel policy and customer confirmation that parcel has been opened and contents received as listed (in what condition/or not as per order request). The courier should sign having confirmed the receipt contents. more
Mr.Nair has echoed my thoughts exactly. When already a system is in place...tried and trusted, we try to bring it down by switching to non-conventional modes and then cry foul...many old systems collapsed due to people experimenting with new models. more
A limit, as a percentage of postal charges should be set for courier services. If the postal charges are Rs 100 the courier charges should be capped to Rs. 150 (say). The acknowledgement of receipt by the receiving party should be made mandatory more
When we have an excellent postal service, why should we go to these courier companies.Except a very few,all the courier companies are fraud and cheats. There is no remedy for delay in delivery or loss of the document or even theft of the contents of the parcel.A few fraudulent activities that came to my notice are 1.To avoid delivering to the addressee, they ring up and say that there is a courier for you and ask for the location, direction etc. and then keep quiet. The recipient get curious and anxious and after waiting for days one two three and finally go in person to the courier company and get the letter or parcel. Thus they save manpower and expenses. 2.You can't contact any responsible person from the company because the company gives franchisee to people and get the monetary share from them.So the company becomes famous by having branches and so called services every nook and corner of the country. 3.We pay a much higher amount as charges to courier services than postal rates thinking that courier services are more reliable and fast, which is a wrong impression. Exceptions are there. more
Another cause for concern is the outrageous charges being levied by some courier companies. For instance, a local courier in Delhi of A4 size Bank statements (10 pages in all) via Blue Star is Rs.350/-! We do need reliability, but charges should be commensurate with the service being provided. Surely Rs.350/- is an exorbitant charge for a light local delivery. How does one fight this? more
