Pharmaceutical Pricing

With ever rising medical costs it's about time the Government cracks a whip since 99% of medicines made in India are 'me too' products with no research effort involved.

I would suggest separate categories for medicines, medical devices, common consumables etc. Within those, sub categories will have to be decided such as tablets, capsules, oral liquids, injectibles and depending upon degree of sophistication (and investment) required to manufacture, profit margins can be decided.

The medicines which are patented by the manufacturers (those 1% or less) will have to have different margins / free pricing for a stipulated period as these have gone through a very long gestation period and costs involved are very high.

Combination formulations which are made primarily to escape price control should be brought under pricing mechanism.

Presently, as per Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) a manufacturer is permitted 100% margin over manufacturing costs. Also, a price increase of 10% per year is admissible.

The present pricing formula adopted by Drug Control Authorities, based on average prices of different companies, is absurd.

We can keep discussing this however I don't see any willingness on the part of the Government to bring in strict pricing mechanism at least till the next general elections. more

MRP should not be more than 1.5 of manufacturing cost.Max can be 2 times. more
No one has control on the pharmaceutical pricing, causing lot of burden on Sr. Citizens. more
Not only medicines but the government has no control over pricing of any consumer items. Taking this opportunity, the manufacturers continue to increase prices of their products periodically. In medical sector, the manufacturers have adopted a clever policy of increasing the prices in every 3 months or so with small amounts, to say, 3 to 4% instead of increasing by 10 -15% in one stroke, so that such small increases do not draw any ones' attention. Our government lacks will power to stop such foul play of the manufacturers. A couple of years back, the Supreme Court stipulated that the doctors should prescribe the medicines mentioning the combinations instead of writing by names and should be written in capital letters but the concerned authorities didn't make any efforts for implementation of the directives of the Court. Mentioning the combinations would facilitate the patients to go for generic medicines in large scale saving a lion part of their expenses on medicines. The private hospitals, irrespective of their names and status, are alike butcher houses. The indoor patients are sucked till their last drop of blood. Medical insurance policies only make their lust for money more widen until their bills consume the entire face value of the policies. The government hospitals are much cheaper and reasonable but unable to meet our other expectations, such as, star rated private rooms, cleanliness, sophisticated services etc. Hence, one has to compromise with either of these. It would not be out of place to mention that though an average indian is unable to meet the expenses in a renowned private hospital, if we take into account their investment, expenses on maintenance and staff, the prices of renowned doctors etc., the prices they charge are not too much excepting those falsely added to the bills in the name of various repeated tests, investigations, inflated doctors' visits & medicine doses etc., which are very difficult to counter check and control. more
I fully support the proposition except that even for patented medicine, not more than 100% mark up over cost should be allowed. The markup on manufacturing costs should not be more than 60% in any case. Also, all medicines should be at 0% GST rate. The hospitals are also fleecing patients. Let us also seek control over this loot in some meaningful way. They cannot charge consumables at inflated price and should be forced to keep store records of consumables purchased and used for patients. Doctor's Visit charges also need to be controlled (may be a max scale be set by Govt in consultation with Medical Council. Hospitals cannot take cut on this. Doctor's visit in hospital can be free from GST too. more
