Plastic Ban by Maharashtra Government

The ban on plastic may appear good in principle but the side effects would be:
1. Loss of jobs for 40,00,000 persons who depend on plastic manufacturing industry for livelihood.
2. Loss of jobs for 4,00,000 persons who depend on plastic recycling industry for livelihood.
3. Minimum Fine of INR 5000 too stiff and may result in Corruption and Blackmail.
4. Increase in price of Milk supplied in plastic pouches.
This appears to be hitting self goal by BJP and Shiv Sena. Instead of creating new jobs this step will destroy jobs and livelihood of very large number of persons. more

I agree, may lead to corruption as outlined by Shailesh ji more
They can start recycling of plastic, and turn them into mixture of laying surface on roads. more
Eco-friendly/Bio-degradable materials have limited lives, and hence can't be used for infinite period, and hence requires renewals. Thus, loss of job in one technology would be adequately compensated with alternative technology. more
I don't think it will affect livelihood that much. Plastic bag manufacturing will be replaced by cloth or paper bag manufacturing, which should be good enough to compensate. After a point it should be remembered that we cannot disregard pollution in the search of economic development. Apart, I have noticed that almost all establishments in malls and supermarkets have not yet received any notification regarding the ban, which is very strange. California Pizza Kitchen, Madame Home etc continue to give plastic bags. So does Hypercity. The least the government can do is convey the directive and honor its own decision instead of sitting pretty. more
