Prescriptions & Medicines
Doctors write prescriptions which are just scribbled & not readable. Doctors should give prescriptions in print in order to :
1. Patient need not visit doctor again for issue of medicines from dispensaries & hospitals. Print of prescription should carry alternative of medicines from different manufacturers.
2. It is also to check corruption in selling medicines at exorbitant rates at hospital pharmaceutical sale outlets.
3. Patient should have freedom to buy medicines of same salt/quantity of any company.
4. Different manufacturers of medicines should write generic/actual names of medicines rather than their own brand names.
5. Government should manufacture some of common drugs as packs have rates improportionate to quantities. For example Thyroxine tablets differ much in quantities packed by same company.
6. Medicine bottle/phial/strip should mention composition/combinations in readable size of alphabets & not so minute to be unreadable, else, pack should also carry with a pamphlet.
7. Ultra sound should not be allowed in residential areas to check misuse for sex determination as such places are opaque/hideous from view.
8. Board of a doctor or his clinic should display his registration number which should be available on internet to verify his qualification, check RMPs & detect fake practitioners.

Jan Aushadhi Kendra's opned up by Govt Support/ Aayush Dept, are supposed to cater to general public with most of Medicine with alternatives drugs based on generic prescriptions at a lower MRP. Which modern Doctor prescribes Generic Drugs instead go fro combination formulations and make Patients to buy specific drugs under fear of curing. Govt Departments dont check effectiveness, they try to help Medical shops from online Medicine aggregates like 1MG/Medlife/Medplus/NetMed ,etc as they give 20 30% discount direct to end customer/ Patients rather to prescribing Dr who otherwise given hefty gifts/ foreign travel in the name of organized Seminar by Pharma Industry. in USA all hospitals/Medical shops dispense medicine under Generic Name of the Drug and Doctors are prescribing the same. Why not in India and help poor middle class who are always at receiving end. more

Mr. Babu , there was a demand from public fro prescriptions to be in caapital letters , am not sure if there was a court order . : But the general prescribing guidelines for doctors are : When prescribing, there are a number of points to take into account. Many doctors do this automatically but this article will provide you with some pointers and reminders to bear in mind when prescribing. Hippocrates' advice 'primum non nocere' - First, do no harm - still holds today. Prescribe only where necessary, and consider benefits versus risks. Involve the patient in decisions about their care and respect patient autonomy. Note the patient's age, medical history (especially of any hepatic or renal dysfunction) and any concurrent medication. THINK ABOUT DOSAGE CAREFULLY; MANUFACTURERS' RECOMMENDED DOSES ARE BASED ON POPULATION STUDIES AND ASSUME 'ONE DOSE FITS ALL'. However, there are genetic differences. New drugs are often marketed at the highest therapeutic level to demonstrate effectiveness in large numbers of patients but companies are not required to provide data on lowest effective dose. If this is a new - potentially long-term - prescription, review the patient to assess for effect, side-effects and the need to continue. more

I think there was a court order to write all medical prescriptions in capital letters and to write drug name instead of brand name. more

There are lots of irregularities being committed by the Doctors, as mentioned above. But unfortunately, government is hardly taking any preventive action. Rather clinics and nursing homes are allowed to be established, which are the root cause of all evils. more
