Prevention of Crime in our country... Shame on the Police Dept.
We have been observing the behaviour of the police in India for long. Taking Hyderabad as an example, the police force is least motivated, very poorly trained in initiating immediate action to prevent a crime. Just recently, in a video that showed a man being hacked repeatedly in the middle of a broad road, in Hyderabad, in daylight, we could see a police patrol van just in front... they did nothing to prevent the crime. They only waited for the murderers to finish their job, and then gingerly approached them expecting them to surrender. And now this example of Dr Priyanka Reddy. Both these incidents almost suggest that the police personnel have become covert accomplices in crime. They are afraid, they are lazy, they are escaping their responsibilities! What is wrong with our police department? Why is it so lethargic in stopping or preventing a crime that is happening in front of their very eyes? It is high time that we as conscientious citizens and members of the Local circles debate over this important subject and offer workable suggestions to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In my humble opinion, it is the basic training of the police personnel that is at fault. Our policemen are not trained nor equipped to confront a criminal at the sight of crime. They are not motivated to overcome fear and risk to self to facilitate a fiery commitment to duty. When compared with the well equipped, well trained, highly motivated constable in the US or Israel, our average policeman is a pathetic sight. You can make out his zeal just by observing the way he stands or walks... he is just a misfit working only for his survival. In the bargain it is people like Dr Priyanka Reddy who become innocent victims.
I have the following suggestion to make for honourable members to read, consider, debate and consolidate for the consideration of the Home Ministry and the PMO.
1. Crime prevention should be given utmost importance
2. A standard protocol, for immediate action to be taken whenever there is a complaint, should be prepared and strictly followed, and it should be delinked with any phone call from any politician.
3. Wherever there is dereliction of duty established in the police, leading to failure to prevent a crime, the concerned officer should be summarily dismissed and tried as an accomplice in the crime.
4. About 200 to 300 hundred able bodied, highly motivated, intelligent policemen should be identified, selected and sent to the US and Israel for intensive training as Trainers in crime prevention. These qualified Trainers should come back and train the rest of the policemen in the country. The exchange programs between the host countries and India should be ongoing.
May the souls of Nirbhaya, Dr Priyanka Reddy and the several unknown victims of crime in our country... Rest in Peace more
