Pricing of Critical Health Devices - Issues

Below are the key issues raised by members in the consumer circle regarding pricing of critical health devices. If you have additional inputs on how citizens get overcharged for such devices when undergoing medical treatment, you are requested to share them. We will soon be having a follow on discussion on solutions to be then shared with key stakeholders for action.

We look forward to your inputs!

Issues with pricing of critical health devices:

1. Critical health devices are sold at a very high rate
2. Since most of these devices are imported, their actual cost is not known to anyone except the sellers
3. No discounts are offered on the MRP
4. Relatives of the patients are forced to buy them from the hospital pharmacy only
5. Compared to the retail sale rates of stents the hospital cost is very high which amounts to looting the patients
6. Doctors often recommend a particular brand , which is priced higher and the benefits go to the doctor
7. The awareness of the availability of such devices in the market among the consumers is limited. more

In this country the health Insurance is not for the welfare of Insured but to fill the coffers of Hospitals. In fact all Public Sector Insurance Companies and some big private sector Insurance Companies should join and fix rates and norms for Hospital services. In the world Insurance Plays larger role in This sector that is how they get good business. It helps to ensure systematic audit of matters. more
