Provide for seat selection online

The railway booking website doesn't allow picking one's seat/berth and one gets to know of the seat number or coach number only after payment is made and transaction is successful. After one finds that the members of a family are given berths in different corners of same coach or different coaches one will lose a fortune to cancel the tickets. This is an important issue for long distance travel when a couple ( young or elderly) or a person with one's aged patents is travelling from, say, kochi to delhi . ..
I often go to railway station to stand in a queue and get physical tickets only to ensure getting tickets together.
It shouldn't be difficult to get a simple improvement in the software to allow a person pick a berth online ( like the bus or airlines) and make the online booking truly customer friendly. more

It is a good suggestion that can be taken up. Will require major change in the software as it has to now implement User Interaction layer for selection of seats, which is resource intensive. If you consider the number of bookings that happen in a day on this platform, implementing the UI layer will severely affect the performance and then we will all complain that the system is very slow or hangs up does not work as per our requirements. Also remember that each train has a different number of coaches, seating etc. To cater to all of this, the design can be implemented but will have a performance issue. In most software design for large scale use, this is a key consideration. So hope we all understand the trade off, if we want this functionality. In my opinion the seat assignment is quite fair, when you book in advance. When you are close to travel date, the assignments are as per availability of berths as per preferences given. Comparing to window booking is not fair. For every ticket booked through the counters, there are probably 10s of tickets booked on line these days. Are you willing to wait 5-10 mins for the booking to happen online? this will cause further issues of malpractice by agents etc. I do not work for railways, but have good experience in developing enterprise software. And these are critical factors. Hope we understand and cooperate. Finally even if the berths are different places within a coach or even in another coach, I have seen that fellow passengers are quite considerate and exchange quickly to accommodate our needs, in most cases. So let us hope that the goodness in people will continue, without having the need for technology to interfere. more
this Facility will get misused so that it is restricted. Now till If you see younger person gets lower berth & elder or Senior citizen getting upper seat. The ladies who are getting lower seat / berth find alway sleeping in whole journey. The fellow passengers are sitting on others seat or sit on upper berth. I am travelling since last 38 years in rly, Bus , air so I know peoples attitude. they always misused the provided facilities. Rly . should implement the strict system for berth allocations. This govt. was / is having strong majority to make changes in present system but nothing has been done as no minister is having the basic knowledge of the system , peoples requirement , always mis guided by bureaucrat. No strong persons. AND if somebody has tried to make his wings gets clipped. more
It is a mischievous act of the railways not to reflect such vital information until the ones seeking reservation make the payment in respect of etickets. Surprisingly, even if several berths left unreserved in different coaches, many a times, berths are allotted in different coaches to the members of the passengers listed in a single ticket. This also happens even if there are only two passengers in a ticket. In such cases the ill intention of the railways becomes crystal clear that they expect some extra money to come into their purse by way of cancellation of such tickets! more
This facility is available at the railway booking counters. Why can't it be extended to the passengers who do online reservations? more
Yes it is required..Rlys should think of it.... more
