PUNCTUALITY OF TRAINS - BROADLY SPEAKING THE 2 ASPECTS THAT CONTRIBUTE :

*ONE - INTERNAL -UNDER THE CONTROLL & RESPONSIBILITY OF RAILWAYS .

*TWO - EXTERNAL - PROTESTS , NATURES FURIES .
The second one is beyond the controll of the Railways .

It is not so with the first one . If every department is clear about its responsibility and sincere Railways can negate this trend of Delayed running of trains . Some times even more than 12 hours . Were is the value for time? It is not like in olden days , today's Indian has less time to waste , they want to reduce their time spending on travel .

REMEDY FOR LATE ARRIVAL OF THE TRAIN FOR THE SAKE OF PLATFORM CLEARANCE :
One of the solutions from the Circle was to provide more Platforms : Most of the Terminus Railway Stations are situated in the city , leaving very little chances to increase the number of Platforms .

# Under Those conditions , the only other possibility is to have the Platforms in Tier systems . The upper ones can be fo the day and short distance passenger trains where the Rakes are short and the burden of Baggage is less . That will make it easy for the passengers to move out quickly . But Raiways should provide appropriate facilities like Liift, Escalators [not the usual 45 step stair case ]for the Passengers to move comfortably and fast .

# The new EMU style Built in Engines on either side of the Rakes which are being manufactured now at ICF . This prevents the shunting time to the yard and back . As there are 2 Enginr rooms in the Rake one in front and another at the back . When the trains stops at Terminus , after the passengers detrain the rake is taken to the yard for cleaning . If it is a day train like Shatabdi, Double Drcker , Kovai , Intercity etc. So many more all over India. All that the Motor man has to do is lock up one end of theEngine / motor room walk to the other end and start the Train. Saves about 45 minutes.That will prevent trains being held at the outer. This should be pressed into service sooner than later when more complex problems crop up.

# Instead of stopping the train at the outer , " a so near yet so far situation for the passengers " , visualize the situation and stiop at the way side stations before the Terminus . 1. Chennai mysore Shatabdi doesn't stop at Cantonement station , though it stops invariably a the Outr of Bengaluru cityty Railway station. Instead make a stop at Cantt. and one sees about 40 % of the passengers get down . They can reach home early, save fuel, pollute the atmosphere less.
2. At the Chennai Central all or alternate trains can stop at Perambur / Vilivakkam ,Ambatur , INSTEAD OF ARRIVING LATE AT CENTRAL. Further, Central is the eastern most spot ,not having any big residential colonies further east . Passengers have to commute back westwards to the western suburbs. Instead if it stops at the above said stations before , passengers can disperse in all 4 directions , Particularly the well expanded western suburbs . And Railways will do the additional service of saving all their valuable time . They needn't commute all the way to Central to arrive late due to platform and signal clearance . more

Delay can not be attributed to one person/official. It is due to chain of reasons attributing delay. We must fix those bottlenecks responsible for delay. Trying to maintain punctuality by ignoring safety aspect could be serious. more  
If delay can be avoided that can save lot of time to passengers. more  
Railways do not bother for Passenger convenience & act in a typical bureaucratic pattern. It is horrifying when train halts for 30 to 70/80 minutes just 5 KM short of destination. It is very common at Lucknow - Kanpur sector. Train stops at Kanpur Bridge Left Bank (also known as Ganga Ghat) just 5 to 8 KM short of Kanpur Central terminal for hours. Passengers without luggage get Off & take alternate conveyance to reach Kanpur but poor passengers with luggage cannot do that & it is really agonizing time for them. more  
The Railway Minister should take effective steps in finding a solution, but not by threatening. more  
In my opinion the only field in India without much progress is Indian Railways.The average speed of majority of trains running inside Kerala is around 40 kms per hour.Railways can not achieve even this target.One of the reason for this situation is due to stoppage of trains in un scheduled stops.For example,almost all trains passing through Kottayam are stopping in Maavelikkara,Chengannur,Thiruvalla ,Changanacherry though these stops are so close and unimportant.Railway authorities shall make an enquiry to see the exact reason more
