RAC confirmed seats on running trains with overnight travel.
I regularly travel in indian railways. One issue which is absolutely ridiculous is the habit of railways issuing RAC confirmed tickets on overnight trains. That means that side lower berth will be used by two persons for the whole night while both pay the full amount for the single seat.It also means that you cannot cancel the journey unless you are ready to pay the heavy deductions. Now suppose the TTE is unable to confirm the RAC seats due to heavy rush which is always the case in trains. You would be forced to sit and bear the journey without any escape even if you are sick or elderly. We need to ensure railways allow RAC tickets to cancel with minor deductions. This will mitigate the pain for travelers travelling night journey. more
The problem is not of RAC tickets in this case , it is RAC tickets confirmed in side lower berths with 2 person sitting in lower berth and another person sitting in the side upper berths. In these cases of RAC tickets confirmed, you cannot get any money back as refund on cancellation as the railways mischeviously considers it confirmed tickets and deducts the entire amount of confirmed tickets. The problem lies here.If the train is full then this person has to continue sharing the berth paying full fare and expecting the TTE would be kind enough to allocate a berth for which you have paid the full money. The whole case is a dirty policy of the railways to profit from the passenger at whatsoever cost possible. more
Dear Shri Ghoshal, In case of cancellation of Waitlisted and RAC tickets, you do not lose much money, only the minimum charge. Previousy, TTE was at liberty to sell ( I am using the word sell deliberately) to the highest Bidder. Now he has no other option to give it to RAC passengers. If you have an urgency, travel or cancel your RAC ticket to give comfort to the other passengers. more
Just by providing a link to post comment, nothing is achieved other than a small satisfaction to the aggrieved that they have expressed their feelings. So please reply to this genuine problem, I faced in your train. I booked three ticket for myself, wife and minor daughter in Tatkal. Two got confirmed. We boarded the train after taking an ordinary ticket for the third person. TTE levied fine for ticketless travel for the third person. I tried to tell him that we were in a trap that we could not cancel the tatkal since there would be no refund. We can not abondon our minor daughter just because her ticket was nbot confirmed. But TTE told us to pay the fine and after paying fine also, no seat was allotted since there is no vacancy. TTE also told that he can ask the third passenger to deboard because ordinary ticket is not valid in sleeper class. And TTE comes after almost one hour after departure. This is ridiculous. Do not confirm ticket partially because passengers have no option but to lose money. more
