Rail Mantri may accept our demand

Seems like one of the circle asks about flexi fares being abolished is finally seeing light of the day. Per news reports
The Ministry of Railways is having a rethink on flexi-fares and bringing in a dynamic pricing system that will help increase occupancy and provide lower fares when demand is low.

Let us keep this discussion going so ministry acts on it rather quickly than waiting till July 1. more

Railway does not comes under "Business" activity, but a service provider. Let the fare be fixed or increased, but it should be equal for all in a particular class. Additional charges can be there for tatkal. more
Respected members, you are right in demanding what is owed to you from the government in the form of services. But we should understand that public transport in India is among the cheapest in the world. The Indian railway network in its present form has not expanded much since Independence but the population has gone 4-5 times. How in the world can the existing network cater to such a huge burden of population? Railway passengers in some regions have adopted a tradition of being completely uncivilised and engaging in theft of services meant for passenger who pay by illegally boarding trains without tickets or using waitlisted tickets. And passengers going on short journeys lasting no more than 4-5 hours in sleeper tickets don't bother about them and simply adjust through the journey. However, if someone has paid a considerable amount for the ticket, he would make sure to complain to RPF and get these criminal elements evicted from the train. We have been completely neglectful about railways simply because we hardly pay anything for travel. All over the world, people visit their hometowns once a year during Christmas or other special occassions. But Indians have a tendency to celebrate a dozen or more festivals in a year and also visit their hometowns for engagements, weddings, wedding anniversaries and other functions. The only effective way to do crowd control is to financially pinch them. Unless the police goes about issuing fines left, right and centre for traffic violations, people casually jump red lights and engage in chaos making. The stark difference between traffic in Delhi and that in Ghaziabad is a fine example of the same. Keeping prices low is only helping ticketing agents to make money. I do admit and have been put into situations and will continue to face situations wherein I may have to book tickets in the last minute. But we have to go through that crisis and not expect government to give freebies. In the first place that 1-2 seats remained vacant for me to buy at a highly inflated price ONLY because of flexi fare system didn't it? Would you rather have the tickets remain cheap and not get a reservation at all or pay more to get a ticket during emergency? more
Mr Dua, You are right the system is corrupt. But this complaint will remain eternal and we can do little to wipe that out. As for the Flexi system, I am not sure if it already exists but they should give tickets at dirt cheap rates on routes with less bookings or for very early bookings. That will help passengers who plan their journeys well and cannot afford high ticket prices. I think that should be an alternative instead of wiping it out altogether don't you think?
In Flexi system, the fares tend to become very high only when the seats are getting filled. So under regular fare system, those seats would have anyway become out of your reach. So someone who is willing to pay so much because they are adamant to travel by train might as well pay that right? At the end of the day it is at least recorded money sent to government account instead of under the table rishwat money? more
What is Mr Krishnan trying to say? Railways are also used by people on the lower economic side of the society which itself is a major chunk in India. And for freebies/lower fares, if you are trying to say that services will improve in the railways if the fares are higher then let me tell you that Indian Railways will be the same rotten lot even after hiking the fares by any means. How can one pay difference charges for the same service rendered. I know that dynamic / flexi fares are introduced to take advantage of demand by private companies which is logically unethical. more
Thanks for a sane and responsible assessment. I almost felt all of us simply want only low cost/ free services without thinking a bit further on how such a situation will be financially and otherwise viable. more
Flexifare has been designed are not practical and promotes airtravel instead. Many times I have checked Fare of Rajdhani 2 AC is more than air fare on the given day. It needs to be corrected and please keep in mind super senior citizen prefer rail travel more than air but also can't afford more money . more
If that is the case then why is government running the Indian Railways. How can a government enterprise follow the path of exhorbitant pricing and profits unlike the private companies. They should either increase the fares and keep the same for the same type of service rendered. Or else it should privatized like they are going to do in the case of Air india. more
Let the rules of demand-supply-pricing work then. more
Increasing occupancy one suggestion in favour of senior citizens. We Seniors feel travel by train Pune மும்பை section in view of comfort and convenience of toilet facilities.. Bur when stations lije Dadar etc come, and transfer to western railway or OR vice versa... WE are unable to use staircase in Dadar... Similarly to other suburban stations. Will Seniors be helped by providing wheel chairs.. It would help Seniors and Railways would get more occupancy Vedanarayanan Pune more
Flexible fare or low fare low demand may be applicable only upto limitations both sides as Some min. Basic fare shd be with here and as per demand to either side it may decrease or increase in slot of -/+ 5% to -/+ 30% in step of 5 % As givtcant behave as business houses , it needs to serve for all ....... At other end low fare at low demand time may promote the guys to travel .... more
