Railway help line 139 & 182 shall be toll free number

I would like to share my recent experience in the matter of railway helpline / protection no. 139 @182 . During travelling most of the region don't have any mobile connectivity. In place where there is connectivity require long duration to get a response. In such a situation, if railway charges @ Rs 2 /- per minutes, what help railway is giving, by introducing such a number. Why railway required a paid service. During last journey for getting the bogie cleaned, I tried on 139, didn't get connectivity, but deducted Rs 2 /- from my main balance. How then the passenger dare to try for any call on such services. My request to the group to take up matter with the concerned authorities for a toll free number have multiple channel, for responsive and helpful system. more

139 of IR/IRCTC is no use. I never got it and wasted enough time..... more
I get a good laugh when I read such comments. While we all say 'try and try and you may succeed' is not a saying meant for Indian Railways. there is a word 'Majboori' in Hindi. that is what the people of India experience. there is no other alternative to traveling in India and so you have to depend on it. DONT TELL ME THAT INDIA CANNOT MAKE THE TRAINS LONGER BY ADDING MORE COMPARTMENTS AND AN EXTRA ENGINE TO REDUCE THE RAC, AND WAITING LIST ETC ETC?! WHEN CHINA IS MOVING MILLIONS IN HUNDREDS IN SUPER FAST TRAINS DURING HOLIDAYS AND OTHER OCCASIONS WITHOUT ANY DIFFICULTY, why INDIA CANNOT DO IT? you have the answer, lithargic, sloppy and management with lack of ideas.. the various departments will naturally respond as they are maintained right? with super trains and luxury class etc etc added, the IR is going to have a very poor standard of existence. things may change if it can be privatized or the non productive staff are terminated and for a few years, people for European countries are employed to revamp it. more
Do you know how much time it takes for them to respond? Try once and you will be frustrated. more
I didn't know it is a chargeable No . But if it becomes toll free then nobody will be able to talk , it will remain busy always . This should be any normal no , costing normal charges as per the service provider of caller . However there are many more numbers provided by railways to register complaints . For tracking any train many sites are also available giving on - the - dot info more
