Railways Order Cancellation

Railways placed an order for 2.5 Billion dollars for diesel locmotives with GE. The new minister is wanting to cancel the order in favour of electric locomotives as diesel locos pollute and are expensive to run.

Before lobbying and give-take begins, people must express their views and make them none.

According to me while electric is the right choice right now railways cant afford any till it gets it act together to improving safety and reducing losses. more

I agree that one should go by why it was ordered in the first place to decide what should continue or what should be cancelled, all said and done, the whole process should be speedy and transparent by mentioning the same on the main website- why, which is now preferred, what it will cost and when it will come, rather than just go for tender process, disclosing all on website is better, it will give chance to those who had offered a better quality at lower price oppurtunity to understand how Railways decide. more
This is an internal decision of the Indian Railways and it needs to go for the right traction system; Electric, Diesel, Electric-Diesel mix, of the requisite traction power! None of us outside of the Indian Railways have any idea to the degree of electrification of tracks that are already completed and what length remains to be electrified. That only can determine the need to Diesel powered traction system. I'm not sure how many of us are aware of the Diesel Railways Engine is basically a powerful generator of electricity and the traction is electricity based; the only difference is that instead of pulling the electric power from the overhead cables, it produces it while on move! We might, I repeat might still need to have a backup to the electric traction of a few Diesel traction system also. The issue here seems to be here that the Engine Factory that has been promised to Bihar, at Chapara, for manufacturing the Diesel Engines is being done away with. If the issue is of Bihar losing the Diesel Engine factory the GE could be asked to switch to manufacture of high-haulage electric traction if the same is possible. Nevertheless, the decision on the traction system can be best taken by the Indian Railways! It's not a Customer Service issue where we need to comment and demand this or that way! more
First thing to analyze why the diesel engine was chosen, was it to fill areas Electric locomotive cannot service that area. If so, according to the necessity, for the present, a portion of the GE order can be utilised. For those line which with additional effort can be electrified, in such cases Electric locomotive should be procured. When I say so, the Govt should get the latest and highly efficient, capacity locomotive, not a model which is obsolete in the country of manufacture. No second hand locomotive be purchased, always brand new one only. The Ministry should have new coach making units so that with resources inside our country, we can utilize high speed coaches for all major routes. Time the Obsolete coaches are destroyed, no modification to be made due to high cost, build new ones. Moreover, stick running passenger, express trains to its timings without undue and deliberate delay for allowing other trains, especially goods trains. Special trains need not be looked as prostitute, delaying it deliberately for running regular trains on time or allowing late trains to pass. This will attract more people to utilize Railways than their own mode of travel. more
Many activities have to run in parallel for successful running of an organization. Safety is one of the activities, but with a high priority. Just like uni-gauge project was a good one for railways in improving many operational problems, going electric should also be a priority project. It involves a huge investment not only in engines but also in electrification of tracks. more
It is refreshing to note that the Vibrant Railway Minister has observed that Railways needs to be electrified so it becomes less polluting and more cost effective. The Govt placed an order on GE, it is a fact. Let the Govt renegotiate with GE and let GE suggest ways out to help the Govt in its decision. I am sure that with a proper give and take attitude and dialogue a mutually acceptable solution will be found. KUDOS to our Railway minisrer more
