Railways posts worst operating ratio

Today newspapers are reporting that railways is in its worst financial condition in last 16 years with a 96.6% operating ratio.

this is terrible given all the new initaitives launched in last 2 -3 years. Also, want to let you know that nothing seems to be different on the ground in last 3 years. I visited New Delhi, Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Saria Rohilla in last 2 months. Escalators dont work, platforms have garbage, ttes are still taking bribes, toilets at stations are missing or dirty.

So money has been spent basically with little return and with 7th pay commission its gone in deep red.

Strong intent and will is missing and so is action on public opinion. delivering milk to crying babies is a media-op and not railways job but the babies parents.

Hope the message gets to Suresh Prabhu! more

As long as there is corruption, nepotism, mismanagement, nil accountability, not only Railways, many of our PSUs will portray a picture of gloom only. One example is, Private Airlines are expanding their domestic operations almost on a monthly basis, whereas our National Carrier is sleeping like a log. Here the prime reason could be Corruption........................ Railways poor state of affairs is not something new.... for ages its like that only. For sometime thru window dressing (?) it was projected as a healthy organisation. Words like Efficiency, responsibility, pride, discipline, etc have no meaning in our country. All our bureaucrats and leaders visit many countries at our cost but learn nothing..........Difference between us and foreigners is they plan their work and also work their plan..... When will be able to do a proper workable plan? more
1. Increasing fares is no solution. Under dynamic pricing general passenger is already paying up to 50% more than normal fare. Due to this upper middle class is already gradually shifting to low cost airlines. Any further increase will shift more traffic to airlines. 2. Unless Railway employees do their normal assigned duties, scenario is not going to change. On 01-05-2017, I traveled from Kanpur to Ranchi by Ranchi Rajdhani Express in 2 AC (Coach A1), there was no water in toilet. Still there is no system of informing Train Suptd. number to passengers for any help. When asked train Suptd. he said announcement was made when train left New Delhi & no such facility is extended to en-route passengers. When I boarded at Kanpur, I called Train Suptd. & reported the issue. TS answer was no one had reported to him so far. Is it Passengers responsibility only? I fail to understand why Railway employees can not check such grave short-comings before placing such prestigious trains on platforms for departure. Several service persons were on train but neither host station checked defects before placing trains for departure nor house keeping staff in running train. As their pay, perks, increments are protected, they avoid their even routine duties also. Any amount of increasing fares cannot solve attitude issue. 3. As already shared in this forum, caterers are generating black money of 45 Crores per day & 45X365 crores in a year. For allotting berths, TTEs wants their palms to be greased. On said train, 3 berths in a cluster of 6 (1 to 6) were vacant up to Ranchi. Also there is big manipulation in various quotas. Every employee wants to be tipped. A1 coach was littered with sheet envelopes, ice-cream cups but not cleaned by either house keeping staff or caterer. Morning House keeping staff came & wanted a good feed back on cleaning. All garbage was shown to him & also recorded in his feed back book & I am sure it will never reach concerned for corrective action. 4. Coaches are defective. There was no pocket for keeping specs or water bottle holder for berth no. 3. more
Let there be a break even point by increasing the railway fare, excluding the II class fare. more
Stations are not maintained properly. Cleanliness is very low. Still we see lot of begging and unauthorised beggars and others roaming around. Unless the railway stations are cardoned like airports things will not change. Periodic cleaning should take place in each platform every hour. Unless the employees are made to work properly this cannot be achieved. OR outsource maintenance to private service companies. Remove all railway workers who cannot be made to work. This is the only way. more
Do railways really care for all the passenger/user laments? Today TOI Benguluru reports that all its stations lack basic amenities like power carts, elevators and senior citizen help. This being the situation in the capital of Karnataka state wonder what would be the plight of smaller stations railways blowing money on freebies will always struggle for funds to provide facilities. Stoical attitude of the Indian traveler and absence of strong protests makes railways immune. We may soon witness the collapse of another public sector organization. more
