Rampant carbide and ethylene gas ripening of mangoes

Friends - Here from chennai yesterday, a tonne of artificially ripened fruits were seized. fssai should get more active and share such information timely for atleast all major cities.

A total of five tonnes of artificially ripened fruits including a tonne of mangoes were seized from the Koyambedu fruit market and destroyed on Sunday.

Food officials along with a posse of police conducted raids through Saturday night and Sunday early morning to seize 3.25 tonnes of sapotta and 750 kg of banana.

A total of 136 shops were inspected and 24 were found to be using chemicals to ripen the fruits artificially. The seized fruits, worth ₹2.5 lakh, were disposed at the Koyambedu bio-methanisation plant.

The sapottas and mangoes were ripened using carbide gas emitted by calcium carbide stones. The bananas were doused in ethylene gas to ripen them. more

The officers and the staff involved in that raid deserve appreciation. The local media must have given due importance to publish their names. The authorities in other places also act similarly without thinking that such discussions come every summer. Is it not possible to use those fruits with some treatment? more
very good step taken by Chennai officers, but in NCR particularly Haryana it is very bad more
It is almost the Trend of the day every where. Thanks that you got some relief, though it is some start-up, require lot's of action from FFSAI in all places. Advisable to take some help for the Home Guard and / Or NGO's and such other social Organisations so make it a mass movement, only than it can be controlled, if not wiped out totally. more
FASSI must act. more
It needs great cultural change in the Human minds from Grower, Marketeer, FFSAI, Consumer and every one involved. Till then nothing happens. It needs total white wash, simple changes will not do more
Fruitmarket in Jamshedpur have no fear of fssai, They are openly displaying and selling artificially ripened fruits. fssai should also raid other major towns. more
What the food inspectors are doing ????? more
