Dear Sri Venkataraman, If a connecting train in which you had a reservation, is missed, there is a procedure to be adopted for the rest of the missed journey. The first action should be to contact the Station Manager of the intermediate junction station and get your ticket endorsed for further journey by a different train. While the station master can permit the passenger to continue his journey on the same ticket, he can't either provide or assure you of onward reservation. This job is of commercial department comprising the Chief Reservation Inspector (if he is on duty) or the senior most Travelling Ticket Examiner on duty. He will provide you the reservation immediately, if there is vacancy in the chart of that train or in the alternative, he will hand you over to concerned TTE on the relevant train. There-after, it is your luck but the train will carry you to the destination on the same ticket. Alternately, if you want refund and the reservation office is open (scheduled timing), the refund will be given immediately as per rules. While I am not clear on the rules, the passenger, perhaps, loses reservation charges and balance fare is refunded. If the computerised reservation office is not open or the passenger is otherwise in a hurry to move forward, TTE office gives a refund voucher, which is an authority for collecting the money at any ticket counter. The refund voucher can also be sent to Chief Commercial Manager of the Zone from which the voucher was obtained and after some delay and persistent reminders, the pay order for that amount will be received by the passenger. 2. I shall quote my example. We, me & my wife both above 60, had booked tickets by Swarna Jayanthi Express ( going to H.Nizamuddin) connecting to perhaps, Airconditioned Express leaving New Delhi ( perhaps Anand Vihar terminus) to Katra ( Mata Sri Vaishnodevi) between Visakhapatnam and Katra (SVDK) leaving on 12 June 2015. On 13/06, Swarna Jayanti reached H.Nizamuddin 5 hrs. late at 10:30 p.m., which was the scheduled departure of the connecting train at it's origin. At H.Nizamuddin, counters were opened for refund and late arrival endorsements for all passengers with onward journey. It definitely took some time and effort to get the endorsement, but we rushed to New Delhi with it and met the station manager. He immediately telephoned commercial staff and sent us to next available train to Jammu and TTE was waiting for us. He provided us with one lower side berth immediately and perhaps one more later after train moved out of Delhi. We finally reached Katra by bus from Jammu around 12:30 p.m. or so, instead of early morning. It may well be our good fortune or perhaps a bit enlightened approach. It is, therefore, improper to blame others when the deficiency lies with you. If your friend is unaware of the procedure or not helped by the persons, he may have approached, the fault doesn't lie with the organisation. 3. To conclude, I have never been refused refund for any unutilised portion of journey ticket in my independent Travelling period of 51 years (from my age of 16 years to present 67), but I generally keep myself abreast of rules and regulations and abide by them to the best of my ability.
