At an age when many people have a difficult time just getting up off the couch, 77-year-old Mavis Albin plays basketball almost every day.
“A lot of people won’t get up and do anything because it will hurt,” says Mavis, team captain of a championship senior women’s basketball team called the Tigerettes. Instead of yielding to stiff joints and soreness, she swears by a supplement called Celadrin.
Along with a healthy lifestyle, her strategy is working. In its 21-year history, the team has lost only 6 out of 212 games and has won 7 gold medals in the National Senior Games (also called the Senior Olympics). The youngest team member is 67.
Tigerettes are not immune to the normal injuries of basketball like broken fingers, bruises, strains, and sprains, but they seem to recover fast. “We rub the cream on sore areas,” says Albin, “And take Celadrin pills for flexibility in our joints.”
The team began using Celadrin in 2006 after the supplement manufacturer proposed being its corporate sponsor. “When I heard about Celadrin, I wanted to try it,” says Albin; “I don’t like to take drugs.”
A natural compound of fatty acids derived from meat, Celadrin comes in two forms: a dietary supplement pill and a cream. The cream brings quick relief and the pills take at least 10 days or more to build up in the system and start healing joints, but they also have a longer-lasting effect. The two forms complement each other.
Studies show that Celadrin helps to relieve joint problems by reducing inflammation, but in a completely different way from pain-relieving drugs. Anti-inflammatory medications suppress an enzyme, called COX-2, which generates the inflammation that drives pain. They also suppress a beneficial enzyme, called COX-1, and this leads to side effects of stomach damage and bleeding.
Celadrin has no effect on either one of these enzymes and doesn’t cause side effects. Instead, it restores the function of cell membranes, which surround every cell in our bodies. This calms inflammation and pain, and helps to keep joints lubricated and flexible.
Clinical trials with people suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee have found that both Celadrin creams and pills provide relief. For example:
• A study of 40 people, published in The Journal of Rheumatology, found that unlike a placebo, Celadrin cream provided relief within 30 minutes. It improved the ability to walk, including up and down stairs, and to sit down and get up from a chair.
• A study published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning found that Celadrin cream improved balance. Knee pain while standing can make a person shift their weight, from one part of the foot to another, or from foot to foot, disrupting normal balance. Researchers found that Celadrin cream, used twice daily for 30 days, reduced such weight shifting, thereby improving balance.
• Another study, published in the same journal, found that Celadrin cream reduced pain and improved strength in wrists and elbows affected by arthritis.
• A study of 68 people, published in TheJournal of Rheumatology, found that daily use of Celadrin pills, for 30 days, improved pain and range of motion in knees. Some of those in the study were also taking one or more pain medications (and were asked to continue these), but still experienced an improvement with the supplement.
Integrative doctors and people using Celadrin have found that it can help heal strains and sprains, back pain, jaw pain, leg cramps, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, and psoriasis. Celadrin is widely available online, in big-box stores, drug stores, and in health food stores.
