Replacement of Chain Pulling system

One of the key recommendations from you on the subject was to replace the Chain Pulling system with an alternate emergency system.

Railway incurred significant losses every year due to late running of trains because of indiscriminate chain-pulling for no good reason.

The work of removing the chains from trains has already begun. As an alternative arrangement, the mobile phone number of the driver and assistant driver could be displayed in coaches, so passengers can call in case of an emergency. In addition to displaying the mobile phone numbers of the driver and assistant driver, one employee carrying a walkie-talkie would be present for every three coaches in each train.

It was no secret that the chain was rampantly misused by travellers who pulled it in self-interest rather that in case of emergency. The alarm chain is meant to be pulled only in case of emergency, and only when contact cannot be established with the travelling ticket examiner (TTE) on board. As things are now, people pull the chain when relatives or friends might miss the train. Chain-pulling to stop the train was a big menace in UP and Bihar, and train schedules were thrown out of whack by miscreants who pulled the chain for no good reason, causing huge losses to the railways.

We hope that this service will reduce losses, improve timeliness while keeping the emergency service intact but making citizens use it more responsibly. more

Why can't the railway identify the sectors or trains which are prone to this misuse and focus there first ? There is no point in introducing this measure in sectors where such issues may not be prevailing, at least I am not aware if this is an issue in southern, Konkan railways, more
Dear Sir, I was travelling from Anand Vihar terminal to Jamalpur on 07 December, 2015 in Coach A1/ 31 & 33 and train reached destination at 3.30 AM on 09th December, 2015, i.e 16.30 hrs late.Almost all trains passing/ going to eastern India, specially Bihar is running late without fail. 1. Is there callous railway staff in control room and driving cabin in NR/ER/NER ? 2. Why trains going to western part or southern part is not late? 3. Can railway think to change Rly staff form North to South for short interval for better and efficient output through inter-zonal transfer. 4. The responsibility of the control room as well as driving staff should be fixed especially for perpetual late running trains. 5. No overtime remuneration should be given to any staff for late running trains. It was brought to our notice by rly staff itself during travel that once late, intentionally getting late for quick overtime benefit. 6. If any train is regularly running late, running time table be revised and the categories like Mail/ Express/ Superfast be also modified so that fare will be according revised and passengers will be benefited ( eg. Vikramshila Exp- 12368 - Super fast train) 7. Train time table revision should be done in December every year in stead of July. 8. Extra racks to be arranged for perpetual late running trains. 9. Facilities in drivers cabin - A/C Installation, comfortable chair, good wash room, tea maker etc must be provided for smooth and congenial working of the cabin crew. 10. Installation of strong, distant vision fog light be installed. These steps may facilitate for smooth running of trains. Hope Railway may think to incorporate suggetions in near future. -- Bivash Ranjan Conservator of Forest 9412703130 more

I too had suggested for thinking of some new system to replace the chain pull. I had also suggested that edducating the travellers in backward areas where it is misused too much or more often. U can also enhance the punishment to such misuse so that it wll act as a deterrent. Now we have in India highly educated people and people of more knowledge. U can call for more suggestions. I wish the Railways good luck in their endevour to make railways more efficient and profit oriented. more
