review of banks

I am sharing my experience with HDFC Bank I lost my husband and put up my papers for Account transfer to my Account in the same Bank. Its a joint account and all FDs are joint with Either or Survivor mandate. Both of us had our own accounts in the same branch, both being joint. Upon his demise, I wanted to close his account and this is what I faced.
The RM assigned to me at HDFC Bank, totally misguided me. He said that the name of my husband cannot be deleted . I will have to premature all the FDs where in he is the Primary holder.Also. he showed me some calculation, where I would loose around Rs. 20000/- when ,I give the death certificate , as the rule according to him is that I cannot retain the FDs .
I sent the RBI link , which gives the guidelines for deceased . He still insisted that where my husband is the primary holder, I have to premature the FDs even though the E or S is filled in all.I met the Bank Manager of the Branch who repeated the same thing. All in all this went on for a fortnight. Then I said give it to me in writing. This they did not do. But being an elderly women alone, they just argued for a few days insisting that I dont understand.
Where as in SBI , they immediately deleted my husbands name, and made it single in my name. They said since my deposits are on a higher rate, it would be best , so that I wont loose any money,
Several links sent to RM did not help, as he still insisted on being correct.
It has been a very harrowing experience.
I think that Senior citizens will have to pay for NPAs by being mislead and cheated in this fashion. Upon insisting they give it in writing that I cant retain the FDs they did not do so. more

Madam: Please send your grievance to the Banking Ombudsman relating everything that has happened. Send a copy to the Governor, Reserve Bank of India and you will see how your case is solved. more
The bank wants you to close FD prematurely so that they can make money by cutting 1% interest to be paid to you, also when you renew the FD, they will make it at lower interest rate. You have following options: 1. Don't close your FD. Let them go up to maturity and have the principle and interest credited in joint account. Then withdraw the money and close the account for which they will charge you! 2. Report the whole issue to the bank Ombundsman. 3. Give a written complaint to the bank manager and copy to the chairman and relationship officer of the bank. This will put pressure on the bank to be more cooperative. more
The supervisory role of "RBI & Ombudsman system" over functioning & complaints & grievance handling process against commercial banks is far from satisfaction in my opinion,(when compared with efficiency levels of 2 decades back) excepting wastage of time & resources, save in exceptional situations .This is a practical situation, Even complaint is lodged with finance ministry, it would normally support the bureaucrats save in exceptional situations.Second part is seeking legal remedy which is a time consuming & costly affair with unknown outcome of results, may be positive or negative after a very long period! This is also the current situation of "ease of doing business in our country" in my opinion. more
