India has the second largest road network in the world with over 3 million km of roads of which 60% are paved. These roads make a vital contribution to the India's economy. On the whole, the facilities for the road users are not up to the mark, leading to a high toll of the death victims. Recently, there is a growing concern over the road crash problem.

According to a survey from WHO, each year road traffic injuries take away lives of 1.2 million men, women, and children around the globe and injure many more. The death toll is on the higher side for the countries where pedestrians, motorcyclists and passengers are vulnerable and vehicles lack the safety norms, like India.

Road authorities are not solely responsible for all the accidents. Majority our vehicles are not designed as per foreign standards. Safety measures and precautions are not followed by the most od drivers. If the vehicles are not up to date with tyres, engine, suspension and breaks you can't just drive them with the speed more than hundred Kms most of the drivers commit the same mistake. The drunkards, ametuer and absent minded drivers generally met with the accidents. Many bus drivers and long distance or interstate transportation drivers get the sleep dose while driving and cause fatal accidents. Our roads are fine, there are warning signs in the accident prone zones but these are ignored by the many drivers particularly during night time and met with the fatal accidents. Many vehicle drivers don't help to the victims due to the strange policy of police and death crices are increased. There must be hospitals available near the accident prone zones areas with emergency staff. Sometimes Drs ars not available during serious accident and people died without treatment. This happens only in India. more

A separate ministry/Department for road safety must be established as the present ministry is only into road construction. more
