Dear Mr Sudharani, There are two kinds of dates - expiry date and best before date. As per Food Safety & Standard (Packaging and labelling ) Regulation, 2011 - “Best before” means the date which signifies the end of the period under any stated storage conditions during which the food shall remain fully marketable and shall retain any specific qualities for which tacit or express claims have been made and beyond that date, the food may still be perfectly safe to consume, though its quality may have diminished. However the food shall not be sold if at any stage the product becomes unsafe. “Use – by date” or “Recommended last consumption date” or “Expiry date” means the date which signifies the end of the estimated period under any stated storage conditions, after which the food probably will not have the quality and safety attributes normally expected by the consumers and the food shall not be sold; As per the definition, product with best before date can be sold by the manufacturer even after the best before date has elapsed. The time for which these products can be sold depends on the shelf life study as done by the manufacturer. more  

The sellers should take these off shelf and not sell. May have an agreement with producers. more  

Best before is misleading. Anything can not become stale or unusable suddenly after a date. What perhaps is meant that earlier one uses it, the product remains safe and gradually becomes stale by the date of expiry. That's the reason for discounts on many food items which approach expiry. This also implies that one should use product well before expiry date or best before date. more  

It appears that old issues are raised repeteadly and discussion is going on. It has been made clear that one should consume/use any item before expiry date/ best before the date. Every product has it's shell life. after that it starts getting spoiled slowly and may not be immediately after the date. but it's safe to use as advised. more
