Saving the leopard of Aravalis

Dear Residents of Gurgaon.

This is a response to the threat the Leopard faces in the aravali area and Gurgaon is part of this belt.

Since many years Leopards have inhabitated this area and unlike the other big cats, leopards are more adaptive
near human habitats. In the past few years there have been major leopard casualties in India and this area
of aravalis is in news everyday due to leopard deaths. A lot of these animals die either due to hostile humans
in the villages around this area or due to accidents while crossing roads.

On a general level According to a recent report, 131 leopards have died since the beginning of this year.
Of these, 78 died due to natural causes or in accidents, and poachers killed 53, says the WPSI (Wildlife Protection Society of India).
It is shocking to note that we lose a leopard every two days!

We are a community who is planning to run a campaign where multiple steps would be taken
1)Spreading awareness about how to manage leopard-human interaction in a peaceful way
2)How to coexits with the animal
3)Persuading the government to take measures to avoid leapard kills whereever there is a
road or rail cutting their habitat
4)Digital campaigns and Digital Tools to spread awareness, have animal warning systems in place etc.

We have created a facebook page to provide latest information wrt news in this area related to leopard deaths and other important news.

https://www.facebook.com/savetheleopardofaravali/

Any help in volunteering, Spreading awareness and helping us with digital campaigns would be appreciated. Also
any kind of expert advise is also welcome. Let us collectively collaborate to create a healthy environment where we can
co-exist with nature and wildlife. more

Aravallis is in danger because of the greed of people in Haryana, mainly politicians, bureaucrats, contractors, property dealers, real estate developers etc. All of them are bent upon making money at the cost of anything, including natural environment. If Supreme Court had not stopped, they could have devastated the entire Aravalli region by now. Still they find some clandestine methods to make money by destroying Aravalli. As far as Leopards are concerned (or for that matter any wild animal), it never wants to confront humans. They are very shy. But when they find their habitats devastated and they are unable to find food in their natural habitats, they come out in search of food. Then they have to confront humans and at the end they are killed. This is natural as their habitats are shrinking and humans are encroaching upon their habitats. I have dealt with this subject in some detail in my recent Book (Extinctions-No Comebacks) published by NBT in 2016. We need to stop this trend. Only lip service by our leaders will not do any good. more
We, since Independence have indulged ...to no end, thus have endangered our own lives through self-created pollution, of the worst kind. Rules of gentle living, or "bhaichara" between humans, themselves, has got buried. Brain here is ruled by the brawn, including the powerful politician in the invisible chariot of the Builders. Regardless of which Party -- all are the same ... unethical, kick the rules of governance and talk opposite when giving speeches. The results are showing up -- do we not see the reconstructions, as a corrective to planning of sorts that emanated from A/C chambers in Chandigarh. You cannot reach any place STRAIGHT, have to make 3-4-5 turns to reach even the place you wish to go to is 2-3 furlongs away ! Who cares for the animal kingdom here, free & happy here, i suspect, 35-40 years ago. TRUTH hurts but, has to be faced. The likes of me challenge & ask...by whom ? The answer follows -- politicians, builders, land grabbers by hook or crook, contractors & the ones with muscle power -- say what you will. Sad but true. --devinder chopra /here since 20 years more
Big cats are in their natural habitat in the Aravalis. Humans are invading their abode for selfish reasons and this is extremely unfair to those living beings that cannot defend themselves. Many moons ago, when there was just pockets of human habitation in and around the Aravali range, big cats roamed freely in their natural habitat. The Aravali Range was like a national park. Then, Gurgaon began to burst open and townships, commercial and industrial centers began to emerge. Gurgaon became a center for commerce and turned into the Millennium City. It is a very well-connected City. However, now there is not enough space to accommodate human needs and so, we are willing to sacrifice the natural habitat of big cats for more concrete and less vegetation. Are we being fair to animals and to ourselves? The answer is No. Leave the Aravali Range alone and allow the big cats to live, breed and grow; we have no right to endanger others. more
The natural aquifers in the Aravalis is endangered too. Save our fresh water sources by saving the Aravalis. more
