SBI message on etiquette to employees

I think is a good one. Should also apply to all Govt offices and private companies...

“One of the key elements that contributes to the emotional value and image of a service brand is the way its representatives carry themselves while interacting with customers, associates and other relevant constituents,” the circular said. “Every employee is a Brand Ambassador for the Bank and his or her appearance and demeanour have an impact on the image of the Bank.”

The circular also asked staff to wear clean shoes and not slippers and said that “T-Shirts, Jeans and sneakers/sports shoes etc. should not be part of attire.’ Senior male staff in the administrative offices have been asked to wear ‘smart formals’ or ‘smart semi-formals’ and a tie while meeting customers. For senior female employees in the administrative offices, the circular mandated formal Indian or western wear.

It had grooming suggestions too: “Avoid unkempt look (unshaven/ruffled hair”; “practice adequate personal hygiene to keep bad breath/body odour away”; and “keep footwear clean at all times”. Other tips included: same colour for shoes and belts, matching socks for trousers, plain ties for check shirts and ties with designs for plain shirts, suits should be from the same fabric length, and “shirt sleeve should exceed the suit/blazer sleeve length by half an inch”.

The tips on social etiquette included a strong injunction against belching, especially “when in a meeting or among others; it is highly irritating.” It also advised the staff against “slipping into common language in a formal meeting” as “it is considered unprofessional”. more

It is fine except for one thing. Why should we insist on Western dress? I worked in the Middle East banking sector for 22 years. Each country is proud of their particular national dress, and this is the dress code not only for the Government sector, but private sector too. The colour white is compulsory. National dress is in no way inferior to Western dress. We should follow the same in India. That is allow the employees to wear formal dress of Indian origin, in white (for men), or Western dress as specified above. This includes footwear too. more
Dress code is a must and should be made compulsory as this reflects not only the attitude of the bank but also the presentation ,and clothes reflect a lot.Once you walk in any buisness institution you should feel you are being greeted by a dignified person who has the sense of attire and definitely shall also have the sense to understand and solve the query.Appearances reflect a lot. more
Mr. S K Virmani has accurately hit the bull's eye - but only one eye. Apart from 'assured business' by the SBI organisation, 'assured job' at the individual personnel level is another cause. How many personnel from SBI has lost their services by providing services of thousand crores to Mr. Vijay Mallya and also remaining passive or mute spectator to his planned escape? It is also discernible to note that Mr. Mallya had challenged the actions being taken against him stating - there are so many other such defaulters, but why he is being isolated ! Without any knowledge of any of the members of our circle - I can vouch that none of us could ever had a handshake or a 'hallo' from any chairman and/or member of SBI, but Mr.Mallya had hot as also cold solid and liquid treats with many of them on many occasions. more
Reaction of Mr. S.K. Sethi on my comments was not understood by me. Is he using it to obtain brokerage for increasing the sell of 'Listerine' (a well known MNC with lot of skeletons in their cupboard) or defending/encouraging State Bank of India! In either or both of the cases, he can pursue either or both the companies for defamation against me (and obtain brokerage from them). more
I agree with Mr Sarkar. more
Is SBI thinking backward? Technological advancement shall bring in virtual banks as such physical banks become a history. Customer meets will be organized in hotels or customers premises and will not be in banks. What all required is a prompt service. Are they ready for that? Most of their ATMs are either defective or cash less! more
