Self inflicted torture for public cause - Annamalai’s Gandhian approach
While several persons have condemned this incident and laid blame on police and Tamil Nadu government, the state BJP President Annamalai has now announced a unique and Gandhian way of protest.
Reacting to this incident, Annamalai expressed his anguish and frustration that inspite of being a state leader of a political party, he could not stop such incidents during the last three years of his leadership.
Annamalai said that his” blood boiled” when he heard this incident and said that he really would not know how to react to this situation. He also perhaps, implicitly said that as he is a part of the society , he has also to take share of the blame for such incidents happening in society. This is where he has emulated Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi went on fast several time protesting against injustice and peaeding for peace and harmony in society. when Hindu Muslim riot took place in India and Mahatma Gandhi appealed to everyone to shed violence and live peacefully which was ignored , Mahatma Gandhi decided that he would punish himself for the evil incidents in the society . He went on a fast to satisfy his conscience and expressed his disgust at the turn of events. Obviously, Mahatma Gandhi had felt that if he would not suffer and punish himself for his inability to stop such violence to save the society from violence, then he would be guilty himself.
Annamalai also has reacted to this disturbing incident in Chennai city in the same ways Mahatma Gandhi did by publicly announcing that he would whip himself six times and also refrain from wearing chappals until the present government in Tamil Nadu which he considers as responsible for such sad of events would be replaced.
Those who can understand the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi can alone understand the spirit of Annamalai in taking this self inflicting step..
