Service Charge Enforcement is poor in Delhi and NCR
In last 3 months, I see many more restaurants defend charging of service charge. I request consumer affairs department to take strict actions against this. why are your legal metrology officers not visiting restaurants so close to you in khan market and cp. more

@ Ravinder Goyal ji, the notification of the Govt clearly says to leave the column blank. The question is whether the restaurants are following or not and that is the reason, there is a need to write the complaints to bring it to the notice of the enforcement departments. Violations need to be booked for prosecution.. more

@Ravinder Goyal ji, I appreciate the concern stated by you. Therefore it is necessary not to spoil the mood after dining. You can softly ask about your intention not to pay service charges. In most of the situation, the restaurant would reverse the charges. In case he is not doing, dont argue with them. Please pay and ask him to provide email id of the restaurant where the complaint could be written. Come back happily and write a complaint to the restaurant with a copy to the State Department of Consumer Affairs. This is the practical suggestion as I have got reversal without any argument except two times where I received refund at my house one through cheque and the other through cash. The cash was received the very next day and the cheque was received in about one week. more

Virmani ji.. I am in full agreement with the the procedure as stated for refund of service charge and I appreciate it. But I have another point to make.Presently some restaurants leave the service charge row blank but others add the charge. My plea is to make it mandatory to leave the service charge row blank so that the customer has the option either to pay or not to pay. It needs to be made compulsory to leave the space blank forthis charge.It will do away with the need to beg of the restaurant to reverse the charge. It will also remove the ambiguity in the matter. Moreover the Restaurants will have the clarity and unscrupulous ones will not be able to fleece people most of which even today don't know their rights in the matter.. more

@Ravinder Goyal Ji, How charging the service charges can be made illegal. There may be so many diners who want to pay tips. The Govt has already notified that it has to be charged optionally as per desire of the consumers. Therefore the column for tips need to be left blank which can be filled by the consumer whosoever want to pay the tip. more

Virmani ji, We used to pay the tips earlier also and we continue to do so now where these charges are not added in the bill. The question is how to avoid spoiling your evening when a Restaurant refuses to forego the service charge. It's for your kind information that most of the Restaurants ,except a very few,don't leave the service charge column blank. In India everything looks good on paper but when you face the things on the ground it's quite scary. Why complicate the matter first leaving the service charge blank, mention in the bill then getting it removed, then fight for removal at the spot or carry on your fight.. Such a situation needs to be simplified instead of keeping it complicated.. more

The problem has crept because of making it voluntary. Why it should be changed in the first place and then ask for its reversal. We go to restaurants for having a good time. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth when they refuse to remove it from the bill. Why not to make it illegal to charge? more

As it is the costs of these restaurants are very high and despite some have shoddy service but consumer has to pay 10% as service charge on the bill as there is no Law enacted of any compulsion.The Govt.should enforce one Law regarding the matter and remove the Service charge immediately. more
