Service Charge Experience

After the issue of advisory by the Department of Consumer Affairs, most restaurants have either stopped compulsorily charging service charge or pointing out the matter deleted such charges from the Bill.

I had a recent experience when I took a group of seven people to a famous hotel com restaurant of five star grade called Haveli at Dharmapura behind Juma Masjid in Old Delhi. It was a fixed menu on sundays and after enjoying the food which was sumptuous and nice the bill came with a service charge of 10% that is 1780.oo. GST 18%.

I went to the manager and asked how he charged me service charge. Told him about govt circular. .He told me to wait and went to consult his superior and came with a revised bill of zero service charge. I save 1700.00 ; Of course I did not forget to tip the waiter nicely.

But, having done that I found most customers are foreigners and they pay service charge as billed. In most foreign countries especially in USA refusing to pay tip or service charge is considered as impolite manners. more

Allow me to share the following; would appreciate comments on how and why this is done, thanks! Firstly, it should not be an excuse, but generally one as host overlooks checking the bill before payment, especially when invited guests are on the table. However, at home I checked the bills of two restaurants in Connaught Place. Surprisingly, one (Zabardast Indian Kitchen) had added VAT 20% Service Charge 10% CGST: 2.5% SGST 2.5% The bill of the other restaurant (The GT Road) showed VAT 20% CGST 2.5% SGST 2.5% WHO CHARGES VAT THESE DAYS AND WHY DID THESE RESTAURANTS IN CP DO IT? Is there any special regulation for CP restaurants? Would appreciate comments by members. Hereafter, I've decided not to give in to niceties, but take time to thoroughly check the bills before payment. more
Just for clarification:

I went to both these restaurants and questioned them on service charge and on VAT.

The manager of Zabardast offered to return the service charge. I took it and gave it to the waiter who had served on our table. The amount was minimal, not worth creating a shindy.

I was told by GT Road restaurant that VAT was applicable only to drinks and GSTs to the food items. The bill proved it, so this matter is solved. more

Restaurants inside hotels will levy 5 per cent GST, except in starred hotels where the tariff is Rs 7,500 or more. The rate for restaurants in starred hotel will remain 18 per cent along with the benefit of input tax credit. Outdoor catering will also be taxed at 18 per cent along with ITC. The "Haveli where I went had room tariif is Rs 17000. So, 18% GST is correct more
I agree with Ms Angel Saxby. Ignorance of law is no excuse at all. more
