Service Charge on e-ticket
Service charge should be levied only when passengers book ticket over the counter as one person (railway employee) is providing service to another (passenger).
In case of e-ticket, railway employee (booking staff) is not involved.
Private companies usually provide discount on on-line payment, the railway must also provide discount on e-ticket to encourage passengers to book/purchase tickets on line rather than buying ticket at counters.
The Railways can save millions of rupees , if majority of passengers opt for e-ticketing for the following simple reasons:
1. Lesser counters will mean lesser manpower to man the ticketing counter.
2. Cost of setting up new ticketing cum reservation counter at cities/towns can be reduced which will reduce the operating costs.
3. No. of existing ticketing cum reservation counter at cities/towns can be reduced which will reduce the operating costs further.
4. By providing discount, passengers will be encouraged to opt for e-ticketing.
