Shelf Life of Medicines

Many medicines are being sold by chemists at full prices where only 20-40% shelf life is left.

I understand that medicines dont come under FSSAI but I want to request LocalCircles and members of the circles to take up this matter.

If shelf life left is less than 20% on medicines, should a chemist charge full price.

Who is the authority and why are they not regulating this. If foods with 59% shelf life cannot be imported into India why are consumers being sold meds with 20% shelf life at full prices. more

Medicines are shelf life and ingredients etc are controlled by State Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Drug controller is the authority who assisted by Drug inspectors who will check all anomalies in the market. more

I refer to some of the comments specially of Madam Jyoti Kapoor. There are two aspects. 1. If the chemist is keeping expired medicine in the shelf for sale, the chemist can be prosecuted. Keeping the medicine in the shelf after expiry date is illegal. 2. In case the chemist is selling the medicine with some period left with expiry date, he is not violating any rules. The medicines for normal consumption should have date left over for the expiry date. Say you are buying medicine for 10 days and the medicine shall be expiring in 11 days, there is nothing wrong in the transaction. In the case of medicine there is no best by date like food items. It is either expired or not expired. Hence the shelf life is not meaningful in the case of medicines. more
The issue is relevant and needs wider discussion to arrive at a reasonable conclusion. Medicines with a short remnant shelf life must be given at substantial discount. Will the pharmacists agree? On the other hand, how to deal with the pharmacists creating an artificial scarcity and not offering any discount? Patient/patient party will be forced ro buy whatever is available. more
MANUFACTURE SALE, PURCHASE ,STORAGE CARRIAGE OF MEDICINES IS COVERED UNDER DRUGS & COSMETICS ACT, BUT THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE LEGAL PROVISIONS ARE LACKING AS THERE IS SHORTAGE OF INSPECTORATE. GOVT AND OTHER GOVT AIDED INSTITUTIONS ARE THE BIGGEST PURCHASERS OF MEDICINES FOR THEIR HEALTH SCHEME, YET THE GOVT & OTHER AGENCIES WHILE FLOATING PURCHASE INQUIRIES SIMPLY GO BY THE PAPER WORK OF THE VENDORS INSTEAD OF ACTUAL MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENT OF THE PHARMA COMPANIES. WHEREAS USA EXERCISES STRICT QUALITY CONFIRMATION OVER INDIAN PHARMA COMPANIES AND DISALLOWS IMPORT TO THE USA OF THE PRODUCTS OF MANUFACTURES NOT MEETING THEIR REQUIREMENT OF QUALITY ASSURANCE BUT OUR GOVT IN INDIA FOLLOWS SIMPLY PAPER WORK. GOVT PURCHASES MEDICINES EVEN OF THOSE COMPANIES BLACKLISTED BY USA. REGARDING VARIABLE CHARGING OF PRICES ACCORDING DATE OF EXPIRY IT IS REALLY GOOD IDEA . THIS CAN BE ENFORCED BY THE CONSUMERS BY PATRONISING THOSE CHEMIST WHICH SELL MEDICINES WITH LONGEST SPAN BETWEEN THE MANUFACTURING AND EXPIRY DATE, BUT THIS CAN BE PRACTICED IN URBAN AREAS WHERE THERE IS COMPETITION BUT IN RURAL AREA IT IS NOT POSSIBLE more
