Should inept CBI be shut down?

The latest episode of Vijay Mallya escaping into the wilderness is nothing but another proof of the ineptness of the agency called CBI. Naturally they have come out justifying their ineptness with various bureaucratic excuses. Even a lay person like me following the news would have known that Mallya will make a break sooner than later to escape the law (however much he can claim to the contrary); but the CBI seems to have simply not even read those newspapers.

The first item in the vision statement in their website states: 'Combating corruption in public life, curb economic and violent crimes through meticulous investigation and prosecution.' As we all know, in the last 10 years we have had several cases of political corruption exposed by alert citizens. I would like to know what exactly has CBI done with all that, how many people are in jail and how much of the loot has been recovered. We have Marans, Karunanidhis and Rajas happily roaming the country, being ably protected by Z category security (again at tax payers expense). Does CBI consider this as having fulfilled their vision?

To give CBI its due credit, they are very active when a peon takes a bribe of Rs 10. They will spend public money of a few crores in pursuing the case vigorously through our snail-paced judicial system and get a well-deserved punishment for this person which they hope will set an example.

Again their website has tall claims about their forensic investigation capabilities. (I first thought it is quite like FBI of USA). But what bothers me is that whether all these capabilities have resulted in solving any significant criminal cases? I do not recall reading about any such successfully solved cases ever. So what is the purpose except wasting the country's resources?

All I can infer from reading the newspapers is that CBI is simply acting as a tool for carrying out the diktats of whoever is in power (or are otherwise powerful even when out of power) and their net value to the country is negative. As an honest tax-paying citizen I would like to see this agency disbanded and their personnel deployed on real nation-building jobs such as mining coal and uranium, laying roads and such like. more

My reference to Status Personality in the Indian constitution is only the Politicians and their legitimate Status under the Constitution who are away from the point of Equality before Law for arrest and fast judicial process even at Criminal or Financial misuse , misappropriation , misallocation etc., etc., for which enormous power the policing of all Wings failed and fail in their duty . more
Dear Mr Sarma, when it comes to arresting common citizens, there is no legal protection. I have seen several cases where a misguided student commits suicide because he/she was scolded by the teacher and the police promptly arrests the teacher. It is possible because the magistrates (usually coming to positions through reservation channels) sign the arrest warrant without applying their mind (assuming that they have one); some go a step further and give several signed blank arrest warrants where the police inspector can fill the name of anyone whose face he/she does not like. So much for safeguards protecting personal liberty. But when it comes to prominent/politically connected persons, the judiciary and administration ensure all manner of hindrances and protect the person from arrest even if the person concerned is a blatant criminal. Worse still, advocates who are criminals (in our state of TN it is common for advocates to purse a parallel vocation in crime) claim some form of automatic immunity from arrest. Just compare this with USA where even a judge or a senator can be arrested for a crime (even something like IT evasion) and enjoy no special safeguards not applicable to any other common citizen. And when arrested they are given the same treatment including cavity searches. Mera Bharat Mahaaan!!! more
As long as the restrictions on arresting any Citizen or status Personality in Indian Constitution continues , NEITHER CID OR ACB OR CBI OR ANY OTHER AUTHORISED INSPECTORS can discharge their Duties in time . There is absolute need of reform on this issue of permission to arrest or proceed legally . The Political Democracy set in India is such even the Supreme Court Constitutional Bench also cannot to set any law at the interest of either its Citizen or the Nation . more
