Should inept CBI be shut down?
The first item in the vision statement in their website states: 'Combating corruption in public life, curb economic and violent crimes through meticulous investigation and prosecution.' As we all know, in the last 10 years we have had several cases of political corruption exposed by alert citizens. I would like to know what exactly has CBI done with all that, how many people are in jail and how much of the loot has been recovered. We have Marans, Karunanidhis and Rajas happily roaming the country, being ably protected by Z category security (again at tax payers expense). Does CBI consider this as having fulfilled their vision?
To give CBI its due credit, they are very active when a peon takes a bribe of Rs 10. They will spend public money of a few crores in pursuing the case vigorously through our snail-paced judicial system and get a well-deserved punishment for this person which they hope will set an example.
Again their website has tall claims about their forensic investigation capabilities. (I first thought it is quite like FBI of USA). But what bothers me is that whether all these capabilities have resulted in solving any significant criminal cases? I do not recall reading about any such successfully solved cases ever. So what is the purpose except wasting the country's resources?
All I can infer from reading the newspapers is that CBI is simply acting as a tool for carrying out the diktats of whoever is in power (or are otherwise powerful even when out of power) and their net value to the country is negative. As an honest tax-paying citizen I would like to see this agency disbanded and their personnel deployed on real nation-building jobs such as mining coal and uranium, laying roads and such like. more
