Solutions to reduce Consumer Grievances in Medical Industry

Dear Friends,

Based on the issues/root causes, these are the key solutions as suggested by you to reduce consumer grievances in the Medical industry.

1. Better cleanliness and hygiene should be maintained in government hospitals
2. All the hospitals to be equipped with credit card machines
3. Squad to be send to private and government hospitals to identify the public problems
4. Old Machineries in government hospitals to be replaced
5. All medical stores to be monitored and should have standard rates with less profit
6. Admission procedure to be made easy and affordable in both private and government hospitals
7. Medical representatives visiting the doctors should be made illegal. They should be handled by the admin staff
8. The way to rule out corruption in medical setups is to remove cash. Insurance company should have premium based on 1 to 7 grades & hospitals also rated on grade basis The patient should have option to go any one of his grade of insurance. 100% cost should be met by insurance co & they should post their doctor to monitor quality & nature of treatment. Any malpractice should result in deduction &/or penalty
9. Consultation fee of the doctors should be fixed by the government
10. New generic medicine shops and outlets should be open
11. Generic medicines should have lower taxes and excise based on their MRP
12. The taxes on branded medicines must be on the basis of the printed MRP on the wrappers
13. The price list of different medical procedures should be displayed in the hospital premises
14. Claim Rules must be changed quickly to eradicate corruption in medical claims and provide financial help to people at a time when they need it the most
15. All Medical tests should have maximum standard rates for every state which needs to be approved by a standard govt. body and displayed in every hospital and clinics as a mandatory rule
16. Increase vigilance on hospitals, private clinics, and path labs to unearth the unholy nexus to rob patients smartly
17. Every surgeon's registration number should be recorded before any surgery, thus preventing trainees from doing it on behalf of their superiors. Anything goes wrong, the registered surgeon should be held accountable.

Kindly add if you have any more suggestions as a comment to this post. We will be conducting the same exercise for Real Estate, Airline, Banking and Telecom industry and Issues, Root Causes and Solutions will be submitted to Government consumer bodies as well as related ministries for action.

Best Regards,

Excellent suggestions. I would add like to add a few more. 1. All students from 9th standard should be compulsorily sent to various hospitals to assist in nursing or some help so that they will understand the service the Doctors/ Government/ Nurses and Para medical staff are doing. They will also understand the importance of giving way to ambulances. 2. Schools and colleges can be encouraged to collect used bedsheets/ Towels/ Sarees/ so that these can be washed and cleaned to be used by extremely poor patients, like additional bedsheets for beds/ Cloth Diapers for adults and babies etc. more
1. The photo copies of the details of the medical treatment provided to the patients during the stay at the Hospital/ Clinics should be provided to the patient at the time of discharge. 2. There should be readressal system in place , so that any complaint/ unsatisfactory filed against the specific treatment to the patients. more
1. All private hospitals should display conspicuously the charges for each and every procedure. These display should be made available to all on demand free of cost. 2.The name of these procedures should be in medical terms with explanation to it as a common man can at-least understand what is that procedure. 3. The rates chargeable should lao be posted in the website of the hospitals. This will enable patients assessing the cost of treatment and will bring positive competition in the field. Government should issue directions/enact legislation to this effect. more
Now, there is a vast difference in rates charged among the private hospitals for treatment of a same disease or ailment. A Govt. body is required to control the rates for surgery, lab. tests, consultation, bed charges, etc. etc. in the medical field. As per the standard of the hospital, the body can approve the rates charged by the each and every private hospitals So, the private hospitals can be classified based on some standards or grades. The rates can be widely displayed by the Govt. as well as by the concerned hospital. This will be much helpful to the private hospitals to gain confidence from public. The rates may be reviewed periodically as per the cost escalation. more
1.The policy to be framed by the Govt. in such a way that the present "business model approach" to be changed to "service oriented model" with less cost and better treatment.2.The policy should be such depending on the size of hospital, the services/types of treatments offered, the qualification, experience of doctors/supporting staff, the facilities/equipments available, the hospitals to be graded like A,B,C and their quality of services, customer complaints/grievances,success stories in treatments,R&D's,etc to be monitored by a constituted body of medical professionals from Govt./Private/public once in 6 months for accountablity. The failure to comply repeatedly should result in cancellation of licence/closure.3.Sameway the policy should be such that not anybody without any professional background can start a new clinic/hospital/pharmacy/Lab just by pumping money.4. The medicines distribution channel to public needs to be reviewed and too many middlemen to be eliminated to bring down the cost.5.To ensure quality of future medical professionals coming out of colleges, the entry criteria for admissions, merit, the quality of education, practical training, the cost for the courses needs to be reviewed seriously with respect to institutions quality standards and loop holes plugged to prevent any erosion of quality services at affordable cost continuously. more
