Sports in India - Key Issues

Dear Friends,

If you compare what we as a country achieve in Olympics and other international sports forums in comparison to our 1.1 Billion population, the numbers are miniscule.

India can achieve a lot more in sports. Through this post, we request all members to share the Key Issues related to all aspects of Sports (Infrastructure, Training, Opportunities, etc)

Once we know the Issues, we will review the Root Causes and Solutions separately with the objective of delivering a comprehensive whitepaper to the Ministry of Sports.

I look forward to your participation!

Can all the parks have provision in some corner for certain games like badminton, carom or Table Tennis etc. for the people /children even on a small charge/ annual fee/ membership. This will definitely encourage many to join and go to play and walk on the park for health benefit. The Sports Ministry should have tie ups with the Municipal Corporation or people having space to allot for many such sports' activities. I am sure many will be encouraged to join and get benefited. This way culture of sports can be infused among young and old. more
If we work on sports field to make it to international standards I hope it will increase the potential of economy--by way of foreigners coming over here to play. Thereby Tourism, sponsoring company's products, well wishes and by lateral ties with other countries will get a boost and so many other benefits come with it. more
Hope we are getting inputs from sports person too on this as that would be more appropriate. Monopoly of Cricket is a major hurdle to nurture other skill sports. Some of the parents who admit their kids in sports are keen only to obtain college seats or govt. jobs through sports quota. Emulate success in badminton in other field of sports (e.g., Gopichand mentoring Saina Nehwal and the results are there to see) Choosing the best coach for the job, who is dedicated more
Sports Infrastructure is a glaring omission in everybody's mind. Is it because we don't have the culture of sports in us or are we into the rat race of sustaining the tidal onslaughts of education, employment, position, marriage etc? If our ATTITUDE changes I think there are possibilities of getting more funding, infrastructure and Training facilities, sports Equipment. When we start spending on these they will in turn positively change the economy of the country. more
Good Morning. I fully agree with Bhooma Kumari that the selectors should be from the field of SPORTS having a respectable experience / excellence. They should have an inclination to be honest to their job / trade which they wish to take up in the selection process. Further proper diet / equipment / training should be imparted to the selected candidates, sincere effort should be taken to put the candidates on the right path. The selectors / trainers should be answerable for each and every wrongdoing in the upbringing of these upcoming sports - men / women. more
