Standard for Hand Sanitizers
THE CBI, which has regularly issued alerts to all agencies about online frauds related toCovid-19 over the months, has now issued an alert that might upset the hand sanitiser market. Following inputs received from Interpol, the CBI has warned law enforcement agencies across the country that unscrupulous manufacturers may be using methanol to make spurious hand sanitisers. In a communication, the CBI has stated, “Instances have been reported in other countries where due to huge demand for hand sanitizers...use of methanol was detected to produce counterfeit hand sanitizers. Methanol can be highly toxic and dangerous for the human body.”

The unscrupulous people are waiting to take advantage of the demands of common people. The manipulation in hand sanitiser can not be ruled out. The drug inspectors to keep watch on such products.

We have a poor check on infringement of copy right act and production and sale of spurious drugs.

Inspector Raj, which is virtually responsible to check the product are not doing their Job properly for the reason known to the environment. They should be made accountable if spurious drugs or adulteration is found in the product. Also public should be educated to check the various aspect of the product before buying it.

BIS should formulate an Indian Standard for hand sanitizers on an urgent basis and government should make BIS Certification (ISI mark mandatory. This should be done immediately.)

Methanol is highly flammable and toxic also . Direct ingestion of more than 10mL can cause permanent blindness by destruction of the optic nerve, poisoning of the central nervous system, coma and possibly death. These hazards are also true if methanol vapors are inhaled. Adulteration with methanol may not be possible to stop as long as the demand of hand sanitizers is there. So , best way to save ourselves , avoid to use hand sanitizers available from open market and I feel keeping soap papers with everyone who always goes outside and wash at regular intervals , otherwise use of soap is best.

We are living in a world where market is flooded with spurious product including the live saving medicine. Unscrupulous manufactures are able to market their products without any check and the same are being consumed by the environment. We can only hope that fake products are checked before it reaches to the consumer and causes damage to the life.
