Standards for Air Purifiers

PM2.5 particles only constitutes 25 percent of the air. So, a low PM2.5 meter reading inside a room doesn’t necessarily mean you are breathing good air. There are other components like dust, soot, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, viruses, VOCs, sulphur, carbon, etc. which are equally responsible for diseases.

BIS comes under Consumer Affairs. Has BIS developed standards for air purifiers?
If so please share them. If not run a consultation and get all inputs to develop these standards. more

An early standardisation is a must. more
The air purifiers and filter manufacturers seldom refer to any ISO standard or BIS regulations in their technical data sheet. The most nearest reference is seen as 'Proven HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor) dust collection technology for trapping harmful pollutants from air; Specially treated carbon filter with specially sized pallets for better adsorption properties for odor/foul smell, oxides of Sulphide and Nitrogen, dust, cigarette smoke etc Inbuilt ionizer to improve the air quality and refreshing air in the room " There is no numerical value or data referred or nowhere they mention it is safe for human contact or free from allergens, leave alone definition of good air quality more
Removal of particulates, dust & other air born pollutants depends on the type of filters used in the air purifiers. HEPA filters have good efficiency to arrest maximum pollutants so the consumer must check these details while buying such purifiers. more
I agree with Amit Mishra. The standardization of air purifiers needs to done on priority as the market has already started a brisk business. TV and News paper ads are appearing with out making a mention that the item is approved by BIS. An immediate action by BIS will help people to by the right kind of air purifier. more
No standard defined by BIS for in-door air purifier. doesnot have any rules or regulation from pollution control board. more
