Standards for Composting Equipment
Are there any standards made for composting at home. Many societies are now needing this equipment and some standardization must be done so we commom consumers are not taken for a ride.

Mr.Vibhor Dube thank you very much for the extensive tips in Kara web . I am following the guideline mentioned therein . No cooked food and Non veg items except egg shells . We use only home made compost for the kitchen garden upstairs in chennai. I have some stocks of Coconut peat that was sold by the Government Horticultural Department . That comes as layers between the veg waste .

BIS Standard specification is IS 16556 : 2016. It is specifically designed for Municipal Solid Waste Compost, Manure Grade

If a equipment buyer does not have the expertise to select a suitable machine for his use, the usual process is to appoint a consultant who then collects the buyer's requirements and mathes them with the capabilities of the equipment available in the market for sale. After purchase, the consultant also trains the buyer in the proper use/ operation of this equipment. In the purchase of complex equipment, standards are not of much help.

Composting can be done manually without use of any machine. Agriculture University will have a practice for manual composting. Equipment is used to clean, turn, sieve, sort and fill bags. There are no standards for automated composting equipment. Normally such equipment manufacturers association formulates a draft standard and submits it to BIS. A committee will search for similar standards in developed countries. Then a harmonised standard is proposed by the committee. This proposed standard is put through a predefined process after which a n equipment standard is issued to the public. Then a manufacturer has to submit an application claiming that his equipment complies with the standard. This claim is verified by BIS and a certificate is issued in the name of the manufacturer.
