Standards for Diamonds
Can the BIS or members of this circle please advise if there are standard for diamonds in the country.
Just like there is a hallmarking program for gold, is there a program for diamonds also? more

No there are few certifications agencies like EGL (European Gemology Lab) are having many testing and certification centres in India. Their process of testing and certification is expensive , strickt and lengthy so jewellery sellers avoid getting certified from them. If buyer insisit on EGL certified diamond jewellery from seller and ready to wait 48 hours minimum than seller will have to do that. In EGL seller cannot play with grade of Diamonds. Yes. There are parameters like colour and clarity etc. and each jeweller has a certificate from a Govt recognised institute for each and every diamond used in diamond jewellery. more

I understand larger diamonds only can be authentically certified. Smaller ones as in Necklaces can not be tested individually. All certificates are VALID only in that particular shop !!!. Even Hall marked gold, for that matter. In shops other than where the gold or diamonds are purchased, there are discounts at the time of exchange !!! Hope some semblance will come to this business through proper Govt. regulations. more

For diamonds weighing 0.25 cts and above can be certified from some private testing laboratories. Among the laboratories, the most trusted laboratory is GIA (Gemmological Institute of America). One can trust this laboratory (GIA) more than a govt. approved laboratory. The laboratory is situated in Mumbai but its (diamond) collection/delivery centres are in other metros. It's reputation is remarkable all over the world. more
