Standards for Food
Can someone here tell me who makes standards for packaged foods in India. Is it BIS or FSSAI or both?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national Standards Body of India working under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. The organisation was formerly the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), set up under the Resolution of the then Department of Industries and Supplies. On the other hand, the FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through regulation and supervision of food safety. I think, it is now clear.

Dear Madam: Food standards are formulated by FSSAI. These rules are compulsory. All packaged foods must conform to these legal stipulations. BIS/AGMARK are also formulated by government agencies. These are GRADING standards. A packer may or may not adopt/subscribe to theses rules. Once in a while FSSAI may require a particular food item to subscribe to either BIS or AGMARK standard also in addition to its own. With kind regards, Sham Chaudhry

Mr. Kaushik is it FSSAI issues Certificate and BSI Checks on its own or only on by the watch Dog consumers ? Or Both .

But BIS does take action on flouting its quality mark ISI if reported. It protects its mark and the food quality.
I do not know what is the present status of AGMARK standards, whether it exists or has been sidellined?

BIS doesn't check as surveillance . It only checks at the time of giving BIS certfication. In our country FSSAI also simultaneously works on it . But the enforcement, checking promulgation etc; carried out by FSSAI and it is obligatory thru each states n cities food inspectorate Dept's.
