State of Public Toilets - Inputs needed on Root Causes
Dear All:
Based on your inputs, below are the key Issues for the current State of public toilets in India.
Please help identify Root Causes for these Issues. We will then have a separate discussion on Solutions with the objective of developing a Whitepaper with key actions identified.

Public Toilets – Issues
1. Not enough public toilets in towns and villages
2. Lack of public toilets on the highways as well
3. Maintenance of toilets is not a Government priority
4. Lack of skills and funds to maintain toilets
5. Most of the existing toilets are very old
6. Public toilets are very dirty and smelly
7. Drains of most of the public toilets are choked
8. Water supply to public toilets is erratic
9. Some public toilets have been built but still remain locked
10. Some toilets which are in good condition are paid
11. There are no lights in most of the public toilets and hence they cannot be used at nights
12. Taps and commodes are broken more

The municipal authorities and administration are responsible for lack of water and light arrangements in the public toilets. They implement the orders from central government but don't manage very well. The progress report right from construction to day to day maintenance should be highlighted regularly so that surroundig people come to know the exact situation and may take interest in the matter. The awareness required in the villagers to use and clean the toilets. more
