Superbug and antibiotic overuse

India is one of the largest consumers of antibiotics in the world. And its misuse and overuse is rampant. As a result, ‘super bugs’ that are resistant to all known types of antibiotics are starting to thrive..Patients who are on prolonged dialysis and have end-stage kidney or liver disease, are at maximum risk from such ‘super bugs’ since they are frequently exposed to hospitals (a convenient congregating spot for pathogens).

See attached list of antibiotics with highest overuse in India more

In India, doctors only prescribe antibiotics even for simple cold & cough and other viral diseases. They do so just to make more money and become popular among the common masses so that they get more and more patients to see and thus make more and more money. Every time, you go to a doctor for simple ailments, they prescribe newer antibiotics depending upon which company sales agent has approached him and asked him to prescribe his medicines. In US and UK etc, antibiotics are very very rarely prescribed and are not available over the counter. In India, every antibiotic can be purchased without a prescription either. more
Tell the doctor no antibiotic please. I will not take. Give other medicne. more
Vikram, within a population of 1.25 billion, mostly below a normal living earning, it is only natural to have the ""Largest"" of all Uses, including Antibiotics .. specially with no-data from our Big Brother - China !! You, as a Doc, should stop prescribing an Antibiotic for even the commonest of Colds .. then see what happens to these ‘super bugs’ .. the Poorer & Fly-by-Night-Poorest-Newbie Pharmaceutical Companies will die off & there will be less Party Travels for Most Docs !! more
