Supreme Court: Plastic bags a bigger threat to future generations than nuclear weapons

The situation is so bad that, the Times of India reports, two Supreme Court justices have weighed in, saying plastic bags are a more serious threat to future generations than is posed by nuclear weapons. We are leaving a toxic world for our future generations to come.

Due to government neglect across the country, animals particularly cows and bulls are ingesting plastic from garbage dumps and plastic bags are littered across the landscape and oceans. The ingestion of plastic bags chokes the stomach of cows and up to 60 kg of plastic bags were found in the stomachs of cows. What appears to be a healthy cow is in fact a plastic-choked cow or a cow full of plastic.

Apart from the plastic completely choking the digestive system of the cow and causing excruciating pain to the animal, plastic residues enter the human food chain through dairy and animal products.

Some of the basic steps, that one should follow are:
1) Use Newspaper Liners instead of plastic liners, and compost the wet waste at home.
Hence its only dry waste that goes out. No house requires plastic liners at all.
2) Always carry your own bag for grocery and vegetable shopping.
3) Either to a market or Mall carry a folded bag and as far as possible do not even take paper bags.
4) Recycle whatever plastic cans you can at home.

Together we can bring a change. more

I hope Ms. Maneka Gandhi starts a Jana-movement to take care of the animals. In Indian culture we are supposed to have respect for all forms of life. I guess we are losing it fast, that is very sad. more
Holy Cow! I should post a pic of cows in another country where they have electric back scratchers. I have it somewhere. This makes me depressed about our people. Thanks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpjCQD8ynZE more
When we order anything online, they send my order wrapping in 2/3 plastic bags. These plastics bags can't be usable again. Govt need to ban Plastic bags. more
Let's all share best practices, how each one of us is fighting the use of plastic, and implement those in our lives. more
