The Menace of betting
Like all vices were curbed in olden days ,betting was also prohibited .
Since it is habit forming ,some times leading to ruining of family wealth,personal savings ,rupture of matrimonial harmony ,it was looked down upon in society .
With liberal thinking it is now the in - thing in well to do families and traditional betting modes of cock fights, playing cards are going strong now.
It has crept in to election betting, IPL,Test cricket and all formats of games.It is alarming to see as how many poor or middle class families are in debts, penuary and insolvency leading to a few violent incidents, suicides ,homicides etc.
West converted this betting to a tax yielding venture and established gambling zones like Los Vegas, Reno, and many more areas whichneeded inhabitation and development and recently Macao island is the gamblers paradise under China.
For India wecannot ignore traditional betting and come down heavily on new betting running in to crores of black money in betting Games and politics .
One can go for blanket banning or legalise and collect taxes thus legitimising black money .
But still many avenues are left open like drugs, film production,crime, prostitution.
In AP cock fighting though called traditional has attracted many rich ,black money holders to descend on locations during these fights .The govt cannot keep watching as this is one way to collect Tax .
It is a dilemma to the society either to ban immorality or legalise it ,control it ,tax it .

Before legislation come in they must at least book thousands of betters in cockfights investors of AP and gamblers of clubs and publish the results ,then we can expect some action in future .The state govts and central machinery is in limbo now but earlier also they were closing their eyes and ears as many bigwigs are indulging in it . Government should seriously consider enacting a law for placing bets on all sports, election results etc. along with necessary rules. This will allow people to place bets using Credit/Debit Cards, Netbanking and Cheques/Demand Drafts and will reduce the generation of black money. GST of 18% could be levied on bets placed. more

Betting has to be legalized. Schools should teach the evils of betting so that we can dissuade atleast many getting in to it when they become adults. more
