The patient who wanted Rx for eyewear
Ram Prashad had come to our clinic seven years ago as well; this was his second visit. At that time, his eyes were normal except for the refractive error (myopic astigmatism and presbyopia). This time he came and announced: “I have been sent here by my optician to get Rx for spectacles; I had come here earlier too.”
On examination, it was found that Ram Prashad was suffering from cataract in both eyes, and the lenticular opacity was preventing optimal improvement in vision.
Cataract is a progressive disease wherein the lens inside the eye becomes less transparent, and the lens opacity increases gradually over a passage of time. But, despite the progression of cataract, it’s advisable to go in for periodic examination, and to go in as well for new spectacle lenses, as continuing with old spectacles results in eye strain and lesser vision.
Gone are the days when it was customary to ask patients to wait till the cataract matured (became fully ripe); now cataract operation may be performed in any stage of affliction if the lenticular opacity interferes with daily life style.
Whenever in doubt, persons like Ram Prashad are advised to consult their eye doctor. more
