Things to do to protect yourself from pollution

Delhi’s pollution levels have shot up beyond the ‘severe’ category and its now worse than Beijing. Here are some things we can possibly do to save ourselves.

1. Invest in a mask.
As strange as it may look, a mask is your best shot at filtering out particulate matter so that you can breathe cleaner air.

2. Avoid smoking.
Since the air you’re breathing is already full of harmful particles, try to avoid inhaling more of them. Smoking during these conditions can lead to severe health problems.

3. Use public transport as much as possible.
The metro is a great option since it is air-conditioned and underground in some places, limiting your exposure to the pollution. Avoid using vehicles since you will just add to the pollution.

4. Avoid being outdoors at peak traffic hours.
There are more cars on the road during peak hours and the pollution levels just get worse. Try to travel at off-peak hours and avoid walking on roads that have a lot of traffic.

5. If you must travel by car, keep the doors and windows closed.
Avoid opening the doors and windows as much as possible, to limit your exposure to vehicular fumes.

6. Stay home if you are prone to respiratory problems or if you have a heart condition.
Prolonged exposure to pollution can lead to lung diseases, asthma, heart attacks, heart failure and other health problems, so you're better off working from home.

7. Keep the doors and windows shut at home.
When you’re at home, keep the doors and windows shut to keep the contaminated air out, especially if you live in an area that’s very polluted. more

I think what Shisir Kant has written should be implemented. Dr G L Moondra more
There are the Polls being organised now associated with pollution. In my opinion, 1) Ban of any sort will raise the corruption. 2) There are regulations and these need to be complied with. Non-compliance by one and all should be treated equally with no exception. 3) Officials who are unable to impose the regulations and laws should simply be terminated. They are the drivers and drivers can not have any excuse. more
