Tinnitus can be caused due to a varied number of reasons and there is no sure fire cure. The cause and solutions to the problem vary by individuals. The following summary may help: - Blockages or ear infection – ENT can check. Injuries to the head can cause it. If you are taking statin medications for cholesterol etc. a shortage of Co-enzyme Q10 can cause tinnitus – check with your doctor. - Degeneration due to age, stress and fatigue can cause it. - High BP, cardiovascular conditions, anemia, allergies, under-active thyroid, diabetes (a major cause), etc. cause tinnitus. -Smoking, alcohol consumption, caffeinated beverarges such as tea and coffee in large quantities cause it. - Over 200 medications including aspirin, anti-biotics, anti-depressants, quinine medications, etc. can be the culprit. - Avoid foods with taste enhancers such as corn syrup sweeteners, aspartame and MSG. Aspartame is a key ingredient in artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet, Equal, etc. Aspartame is also present in chewing gum, some breakfast cereals, gelatins, puddings, dairy products and carbonated beverages. MSG (glutamate) is used in processed foods, ‘Chinese food’, etc. It is also sometimes referred to as plant protein, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and natural flavouring – check the labels on food packaging. - Excess salt consumption worsens tinnitus. We tend to unknowingly consume more salt through packaged foods, pizza, soups, sandwiches and burgers from the market. Moderation and caution will help. - Garlic, B vitamin complex, B12, citrus foods such as lemons and oranges help reduce tinnitus. - Yoga especially pranayam and meditation can help. - Tinnitus noise is actually an internal sound heard by the brain. Tinnitus Maskers can be a solution. They are similar to hearing aid devices and can be used while sleeping or when the tinnitus noise is high. The external sound of the masker (tuned to an individual) is more easily accepted by the human brain which can learn to ignore the internal tinnitus sound. The masker can eventually be removed if the brain has been retrained to ignore the tinnitus sound through the use of a masking device. A good ENT doctor / audiologist should be able to guide and help.
