It is interesting to NOTE that the LIC had invested several thousand of crorers of rupees in ITC the leading cigarette Mfgr. Company. The Public money to promote the "cigarette" - by a leading Organisation like LIC????? The matter presently is under consideration/Questioned before the Hon'ble Bombay High Court. Might be the logic that people should smoke more cigarettes and acquire deceases like TB and cancer so that LIC will get more business and the LIC top brass will get more promotion, incentives and bonus. By this way they are also contributing to the Indian Economy to prosper more. GOOD LOGIC more
The cost of managing tobacco related diseases to society far exceeds the revenue garnered. Then there is the issue of morbidity and mortality. The government needs to take a holistic view and ban the cultivation of tobacco by around 8-10% per year over a period of 10-15 years. this will minimise the revenue loss and at the same time give ample opportunity for the industry/trade to look at other products without a loss of jobs.
