Toilets ,Commodes, mirrors Mugs in the compartment
I am posting this attachment with some suggestions after reading the good post of Mr.Lele . Thanks Damodar.
The attachment clearly says why passengers don’t use the mugs meant to be used for washing,cleaning resulting in the state of affairs as said .
Western toilets has its own woes. : Dimension wise it is smaller than the Indian style ones . The extension of the commode upwards was not taken into consideration when designed . That required some leg space while sitting on the commode
The mirror and basin in the western are in misplaced positions . Passenger has to stand in the low wet area and use the mirror and the basin to their great discomfort.
The slope is sloppy . that is why there is water logging .Further the floor is also not made of good material . The floors used in most toilets are warped now with undulating surfaces that facilitates water logging; this prevents the passenger to go into the area and pass urine from where ever it is dry . This adds to the woes of the existing ones
Solutions :
The railways has 55,000 coaches and it is not possible to replace the entire toilet design . So what best the railways can do right now is ,in the existing toilets Shift the mirror to the perennially wet area so the passenger stands in the elevated dry area opposite and looks into the mirror and use the basin. This will not be a big challenge , as just 25 % of the toilets are western.
But Railways should keep in mind while designing in future the present demands and not just reproduce the old one or outsource .
There should not be any design just from the designing table , they should be made to phhysically experince the situation . at least the juniors.
Keep a hook to hang the mug so that the long chain doesn’t come into the commode. Chain is important as the safety of rail property is not guaranteed in the yards.
Can some department be allocated the responsibility for the protection of rail property when they are in the yard ? We can’t just say that valuables from rail properties are being stolen from the compartments. We should fix responsibility on the safety of rail safety. This is the property of the people of India. Step up vigil and see that loss of such are answerable by the Security .
While choosing the floor material of the toilet take into consideration the climatic condition that the Bath rooms goes through . They are exposed to the vagaries of the climate unlike inside the sleeping areas. Jai Hind. more

Agreeing fully with the observation ,i would like to further add to the same it is found most of the time the flush is not used by the passengers the main reason for this is the force required to operate the system even an healthy man like me finds it difficult to operate i can very well imagine the plight of weaker people and sex and the children hence this is one area which needs to be seriously looked into as regarding the chains used for the mugs in the western toilets the chain is so short that i personally had to break the same at times to use the mug and now carry an empty bottle of water as knowing fully well that the mug cannot be used due to the length of the chain ,similarly the push button tap makes it really very difficult to operate and fill the mug or bottle hence we should have all the taps either the toilets or the basin of open and close pattern and not the push button type which is very problematic to use vis a vis unhygienic more

I agree to the advice given and would appeal the railways to take notice of it. Also it would be better if the Railways install more western commodes than Indian ones as its easy access and takes less space and good for elderly citizens more

For Senior Citizens,it is very difficult to take water from the tap which is just above the floor. If the length of the chain is increased,it will be possible to take water from the wash basin.This facility was available in Rajdhani Express between Delhi and Mumbai.This very much required so that water can be poured into the commode to keep it clean. Flush system does not work properly in most of the toilets in Trains. more

It will be convenient to use a life foe-set (handshower) for cleaning purpose, i think it is easily can fix to the existing set up. As the Mug fixed with MS Chain, the condition of the chain is very bad as it is rested and pathetic to handle. more
