Total knee replacement surgery

My father aged 75 yrs has been advised total knee replacement. He has problem in both the knees, one having 100% cartillage worn out and in another say 75% problem. The doctors have different opinion, some says that we should go for replacement of both the knees together and some says that we should get one by one done with a gap of say 6-12 months as the other knee joint is still working partially. My father is diabitic and is insulin dependent, but sugar remains under control. He also had angioplasty with 3 stents around 3 years back and the cardiologist has given green signal for the surgery. I request the members to give their opinion whether we should go for single joint or both the joints together for surgery keeping the complete health condition in mind. more

Hi, now a days, orthopaedicians prefers to do both knee replacement together. Benefit-- time saving, money saving and there is no need to go to hospital for surgery twice. As patient is diabetic, and age is more, it may complicate surgery, so anesthetic opinion is also matter. Regards more
What are the advantages of a Staged Total Knee Replacement? The advantages of having a Staged procedure include apparently lower stress level for the cardiovascular system, less complications related with the heart and the deep veins, as well as lower possibility of requiring banked blood after surgery. This is an excellent choice for a patients with cardiac, vascular or pulmonary diseases or above 80 years old. more
I respect the opinion of Dr Raju Vaishya, at Apollo Indraprastha a lot in view of joint replacement surgeries. I would suggest you meet him more
Mr Rajesh. My uncle had same problem like your father, one knee more then the other problematic at the age of nearly 80 years. He got his first knee (more damaged) one replacement done first hoping that he will manage it with one knee replacement. But subsequently he found that after getting one knee replacement his other knee had to under go much more strain and this one also become much more damaged as a result. Finally he had to under take knee replacement of the other also. I am sure doctors will advise you best. more
