Train Reservationi

If I am not wrong, I remember having read it somewhere that the Railways will be completely removing the WL category. It is after a long time that I had to book two tickets in the same train, but boarding locations were different. The website IRCTC , although very simple, neat and user-friendly does not allow an online booking of two persons in one form, with one boarding from one location and the other boarding from another 5 stations away. I checked the availability of seats which showed availability of 45 clear vacant seats at the time of booking one ticket. Hardly three minutes later, when I once again tried to book the 2nd ticket the status changed to 14 WL. I now wonder how is it possible that within a time frame of 3 minutes 44 tickets could have been not only booked, but even the so called WL 14 tickets were booked, making it a total of 58 ticket reservation done in a matter of 3 minutes. Something continues to be drastically fishy. And this for a journey from Ahmedabad to Surat by Shatabdi and for the umpteen number of times that I have traveled from Ahmedabad to Mumbai by Shatabdi (except in peak vacation period) plenty of seats in all coaches go empty. Where is the loop hole and is the practice of block bookings through the hand-in-glove arrangement between Railway booking authorities, TT's and touts continue, so that the extra income is done in the train?. I will certainly wait and watch as to what happens on the day of the journey and shall report if the TT gives a seat with that little extra going into his pocket. more

I agree with Mr Ashok Subbaroa, but it is very serious laps on the part of Rly, that too train like Shatabdi. It is impossible to make book for somany tkts. in three minutes. 01 The most confusing thing while booking on line is.......When tarin departing early morning 05.00 Hours , how to do booking, in such case we need to book tkt after 00.00 hours, but while processing the entire procedure , while making payment through credit card that is not getting through, why because because 00.00 hours card provided make the transaction decline -as such we get sms for debiting the amount but actually it is decline, by the time when we try to re-book the tkt. it show W/L 02 Because of 120 days booking matter, when we try to book from abroad, we came across problem, 120 days counting includes departure from ''ORIGAL'' Departure-i-respective of starting journey other than train starting station, looking to time zone we do make booking but because starting station considered as 1st day of journey- as usual the day of travel does not include in 120 days, so it is quite confusing to calculate 120 days- especially when journey starts before 08.00 hours. more
Quota need to go, if there is an Emergency, it can be very well accommodated against cancelled Tickets, which happens every day. Or other alternative should be there can be only 2 seat quota in AC and 5 in Sleeper class as maximum. Most of the time Quote seats are sold by collectively by all Railway Dept employees. more
As rightly said all political and govt employee quota system should be removed. This discussion is going on since ages but what will the railways administrator do , the politicans rule our country more
Dear Sir, I feel that your understanding of 58 tickets getting sold in 3 min. is apparently not correct. The quota allotted to each station are different. For example, for Ahd-BCT Shatabdi, Ahmedabad (starting station) will have major portion of the seats available after keeping aside "EQ" & Defence Quota, where-as an intermediate station may not even have quota in double digits. If you place yourself in the position of administrator concerned, you will realise that these quotas are essential. EQ helps even a common citizen when there is emergency such as death or birth in a family or even health related travel. Most of the time, the movement of active service person is planned at the last minute. If intermediate stations are not given some quota, more often than not they will have to travel unreserved. When you are booking or even gathering information availability, this quota system gives different result. I may also mention that let alone IRCTC, even counter booking doesn't permit combining when originating or destination or both are different. I guess it is impracticable for humans and laborious for digital systems. Trust this clarifies all issues. more
