Transform Agriculture
Inefficient use of water: I refer to the article "Hidden Strength -Farm Trade" in ET dt 23rd Nov. 2012 by Sh. Ashok Gulati. The data furnished regarding heavy usage of water for growing Paddy (3000 litres per KG of Rice) in Punjab raises vital issues. We must examine whether such agriculture is sustainable. The fact the water table is falling by 33 CMs every year in Punjab/ Haryana belt signals alarm and we must be concerned as to what we are leaving for future generations.
Social scientists may undertake Social Cost alternative farming methods, efficient use of water which are sustainable. Benefit Analysis to determine whether such production for export could be discouraged. If it is not beneficial, we must switch to alternative crops/
2. The present Foodgrain Storage/ handling methods are most primitive . This leads to heavy losses in handling and storage and require total switch to Mechanised Bulk Handling/Storage. If desired I can give a PP presentation on this.
3.Quality: Relaxation of specifications during procurement due to political compulsions should be done away. Procurement can made on strict quality control using equipments to avoid manaul manipulation more
