Treating Cough
Tried, tested, and grandma-approved. As soon as you feel a bout of cough creeping up, toss a cough drop in your mouth. Needless to say, you should carry enough stock at all times. The medicated and soothing cough drop instantly coats the inside of your throat and gives you relief. Cough drops work best for dry coughs and especially more, when combined with herbal ingredients such as ginger and eucalyptus.
2. Sip some warm water
Take tiny sips now and then, and it can ward off the cough by moisturising your throat. In case you have throat congestion, the warmth will loosen it up too and help you breathe better.
3. Is it an allergy?
Has that cough come from nowhere and you can't explain it? Then it could very well be an allergy. If you know the irritants to which you are allergic, you might be able to tell instantly. But that's not always the case with most people. If the cough doesn't go away after a while, even after drinking water, take a mild anti-allergic and wait for 15 minutes. Chances are it will subside.
4. Honey-ginger wonder
Do you remember your mom giving this when you had a bad cough as a kid? It took care of it immediately, didn't it? You probably give your kids the same thing today. Try it yourself - it will work equally well for you.
5. Give up cold foods and drinks
As an adult, there are very few restrictions to follow and most of us don't have enough self-discipline. If you are still sipping iced colas while suffering from a cough, you know what to do.
6. Gargles help
Take 200 ml of lukewarm water and add a pinch salt - this works like a charm. Make sure to do gargles with this mixture 3-4 times a day. Always remember to gargle before going to bed and you will be feeling better within two days.
7. Inhale steam
Or sleep with a humidifier. Most of the times, dry cough is the result of (well... you guessed it) dryness in the air that you are breathing. If you live in places like Delhi or Rajasthan, the steam intake will help improve your cough.
8. Lime-and-cinnamon remedy
This works best for wet cough. Boil two sticks of cinnamon in a cup of lime juice. Cinnamon tends to loosen the phlegm in your throat. Lime contains Vitamin C, much needed to strengthen your immune system so that your body can fight the root illness that is causing the cough.
9. Apple cider vinegar relieves coughing
Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into a cup of water and drink it. The vinegar works as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic on your throat.
10. Try herbal teas
Drink herbal tea or lemon juice and hot water, with a spoonful of honey mixed in it. The hot liquid will loosen the mucus in your throat, and the honey will coat your throat and suppress the cough.
11. Suck a lemon for fast-acting cough relief
This isn't for the faint of heart, but it is a commonly used folk remedy. Quarter a fresh lemon, sprinkle it with lots of black pepper and salt, and suck it for quick relief.
12. Stop smoking
We think we should put this in for good measure, however obvious it may be, because sometimes, even the best of us need a reminder. If you suffer from a persistent and annoying cough, it is time to quit smoking at the earliest.
13. Check your position
Many people start coughing while falling asleep. At times, you will cough when you lay down. But if you sit up, you won't. At night, put a couple of pillows under your head so that you don't cough as much in your sleep.
14. Rub Vaporub
Rub it on your chest and soles of feet to get instant relief, especially before you go to bed. Also, wear socks if the weather allows it.
15. Aromatherapy
Put lavender or jasmine oil in an oil burner and burn. You can even apply it to your bed pillow to breathe as you sleep and onto a handkerchief, to breathe in throughout the day.
16. Breathing technique
Remember to breathe only through your nose since breathing through the mouth causes air to pass through your wind pipe constantly, making it even more dry. Therefore, try this breathing technique. Breathe through your nose and hold your breath for 5-8 seconds. Release. Hold again. Breathe in, hold, and repeat for 4-5 minutes.
17. Last but not the least...
Persistent cough is not merely an annoyance but a symptom that something could be seriously wrong in your body. If a couple of home remedies don't help, make sure you see your physician pronto and nip the problem in the bud. more
