True???? Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Hormone replacement therapy can triple the risk of breast cancer, the biggest ever study has found, following more than a decade of controversy.

Last year the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (Nice) changed guidance to encourage more doctors to prescribe HRT claiming too many menopausal women had been left suffering in silence.

HRT is used to treat uncomfortable symptoms of the menopause – such as hot flushes, migraines, disrupted sleep, mood changes and depression – by topping up the decreased levels of hormones produced by the body.

But doctors were reluctant to prescribe it after a study in 2002 suggested it could raise the risk of cancer, a claim later widely disputed.

Now new findings by the Institute of Cancer Research and Breast Cancer Now suggest the original risk had actually been underestimated.

A study of 100,000 women over 40 years found those who took the combined oestrogen and progestogen pill for around five years were 2.7 times more likely to develop cancer compared to women who took nothing, or only the oestrogen pill.

The risk rose to 3.3 times for women who took the drugs for 15 years or more.

Around 14 in 1,000 women in their 50s are expected to develop breast cancer, but that rises to 34 in 1000 for women taking the combined pill, the study.

Whilst we are talking about riskd of HRT, the biggest killer in India are: 1.Drunken drivers 2.Unsafe buses with worn tyres etc. 3.Women dying during childbirth 550/every Lac, being delivered in India,50 in SriLanka, and 5 in U.K., 12 in USA. 4. Small children under 3 have a very small survival, especially girls. ALL THIS POINTS TO LACK OF MONITORING OF HOSPITALS, (PRIVATE & GOVT.)DOCTORS, AND OUTLAWS( YOU MAY CALL THEM INLAWS). SO PLEASE FIND A WAY TO CONTROL ALL THIS. more
Ranjit Biswas has a point, but those who need HRT, will need them. The 1. point is to use safer estrogen only in lowest doses for not long periods. 2. Unnecessary removal of uterus & ovaries need to be addressed, as more & more are removed. Canadian study showed this in 1979, but this is being ignored. 3. The current P.M. of U.K. is a lady who took HRT for specified period and is O.K. health wise no Cancer.. In short HRT for specific needs for short periods does not lead to any cancer. more
How to get rid of such risks? Either the Doctors themselves should unitedly decide not to prescribe such combination of medicines which expose the patients more & more towards the threat of cancer and this can be treated as unethical for medical practitioners by the WHO or some other international council. Second option is to ban such treatment by the governments concerned. more
Puberty has made an excellent point. But note estrogen alone in small doses does not have same risk. So E2 given through patches has lesser risk. After first 2-3 yrs., local estrogen, by cream also reduces risk. One has not make sure B.P. Is not high, & Cholesterol is monitored. Unnecessary removal of Uterus & Ovaries need to be questioned for need of HRT in earlier ages. more
SIR: Will stem-cell insertion help me six years after brain-stroke? I suffer from motor-problem on the left side and sensory problem (cold) on the right-hand side of my body, after the haemorrhage. If it seems helpful, where should I go to get it done? Kindly advise. more
